Well much of the oil we import comes from Mexico, Venezuela, Alaska and it is sour so I don’t buy that we don’t have oil to refine. We do not bring in oil in any quantities that impact us from the Middle East. The US is in fact an oil exporter. There is no oil shortage in North America, only hype from market trader's driving up prices but no shortage.
The issue then becomes when Mexico and Venezuela, and even domestic producers are tempted to sell internationally because they're being offered higher prices by the folks that would have bought oil elsewhere. That demand can create a bit of shortages. It's a global market.

We will still be buying that same oil, at higher prices but there still will be no shortage of actual oil.

Well, there is now less oil globally. So, technically, there is in fact a shortage. So who gets the oil depends on who pays the piper. Oil companies aren't motivated to keep the oil in the US just because it was produced here if prices are better elsewhere.

Not showing too much impact currently in rural Idaho. Not sure where you are, but around here (McCall area) the shelves were mostly full at NAPA on Tuesday. I order my Motorcraft oil on line because no one carries it locally. The price has gone up but i just got 6 more quarts on Wednesday. Getting spooky like 1973...
1973 … I was a full service gas station attendant. Doing an oil change or patching a tire in the garage and then “ding ding” I would go out and pump gas, wash windows, check oil, change bulbs.

Until the Embargo.

We were open a few hours a day for gas, people waiting in line for us to open, and their license plate had to be even or odd depending on the date.

Gas rose above $.50 / gallon but the pumps would only go to $.499.

Interesting times.

Well poo......I'm in the 5K change up window on at least two vehicles. I am planning a complete driveline fluid change on two project vehicles this summer; this is going to be interesting. Good luck gang! Depending on your regions, the actual shortage effects will vary. But wait, we have plenty of toilet paper now!! Did we ever figure out who had it all???? I never did find anyone with a garage full of it, it just disappeared. Lol

Same boat as you. Just crossed 50k miles in mine, and want to do more than the oil change this go-round. Might be a bit pricey!

Hopefully all this oil and fuel stuff going on makes it easier for me to nab that old LJ wrangler I've been on the lookout for.

Dude. Most of your crude oil comes from Canada. It's probably why we don't have a shortage at the moment as we have a lot and our smaller population base doesn't consume nearly as much.
