So I just changed the oil on my Badlands...got it Friday '23 1100 miles...

Oil was fresh and clean...weirdest thing when I was zeroing out the oil change change life....it had 48% left.

How does a vehicle with 1100 miles clean carfax blah blah get there that fast....

1100 miles and 48% life remaining....I'm stumped

Dealership may have changed the oil without resetting the oil life. The oil life computer is not very smart.

It doesn't matter if it has 12 miles, time is part of the oil change % algorithm.

That may very well have been the first oil change on that '23 vehicle

I has nothing to do with the computer not being smart. The ecu requires feedback that the oil was changed to reset because there's no electronic circuit in the oil pan that tells the ecu that the oil has been drained and refilled. The algorithms are pretty sound and based on a bunch of variables such as time, mileage, driving time lengths, temperatures, etc. If the oil life is not reset that's human error and not the fault of the computer.

I have a 2016 Roush Mustang. I can change the oil right before I store it for the winter, reset the monitor and in the spring when the car comes out of storage the oil life is already reduced.

As others have said, there is a time component as well.

Lots of good things covered here. Tires and brakes care about miles. Engines care about hours running and % of rated HP. Us big stationary engine generator folks test oil every 500 hours. I’ve got 20 year old stand by that have less than 2000 hours running factory oil with perfect results. You heard that right, 20 year old oil, perfect results. Block heaters and 6-8 heat cycles a year to keep moisture out. Proper blend Modern oil really is better than credit is given.
