On the plus side, it totally clears the tire without the extension piece. But, I don't think that is even speed bump capable, let alone off-road capable. Weld on a couple blades and it may work for tilling the garden. (trying to find the positive here).

Not a problem. I suppose with the side rails installed on the top, you would gain some precious inches. But you're right, a speed bump or a high curb could be a real issue

I ended up following the OP's example and trimmed a Harbor Freight cargo basket. I cut an even 4" from each side to bring the total width down to 40".
