Wanted to relay an interesting conversation I had yesterday with a Tire Store Manager (Not a local shop but a chain store). Picked up a set of Mickey Thompson Canyon's in 17x9 for my G6. Went in to order 315 70R 17's. Store Manager said, no, we can not put a wider tire than 11 inches on those rims and 315's are 12 inch tires. I said, that's the factory sized tire that came on the truck with 17x8.5 rims. He said, I was wrong. So, out came our phones and google searches. After a minute, he said, you are right. However, according to our standards we are not suppose to put anything more than 2" wider than the rim width. He made a phone call, explained the situation, to what I assumed was a regional super, came back to me and said he would do it as it was factory but I would have to sign a waiver.

That being said, he price matched a set of tires to the lowest on line price, something he also had to document because it was above his "authority" to do due to the price difference. So, soon as they come in, we will get them put on the truck.

Just an FYI, in case anyone ever questions putting stock tires on stock rims.

That sounds pretty standard. Especially in corporations, they have policies/procedures in place to protect themselves from liability.

We live in a world where many people refuse to take personal responsibility and instead look for someone else to blame.

"My tire(s) did ___ and that never would have happened had the tire shop protected me from myself and not installed what I asked for."

Lawyers love those cases because it's almost always financially efficient for the insurance company (for the corporate tire store) to settle before it ever gets inside a courtroom.

We need to start a new chain for "My Tire Store Says", like we did for "My Dealer Says". Funny how they will hold you for ransom with some regulation they feel like they need to enforce. Gone are the days when the 'Customer was always right'.

I have no doubt that if you checked the parking lot there, there'd be some idiot with outrageous 14" wide tires because that's the look they NEEDED for their ride.

I’m an old dude but in the old days you would never put a 12 inch wide tire on anything narrower than a 10 inch wide wheel. Myold F250 has 12.5 inch tires on a 9.75 inch Weld wheel as an example.

I don't think Ford consulted the old books when they tossed 315's on 8.5" rims.

Yeah, I get it. They wanted to make sure they had plenty of wheel protection for rock crawling and I understand that. I just thought it was interesting.

Which is why I LOVE Regal Tire and Auto Pros in Auburn, WA. They know the Bronco inside and out (more than just tires) and don't need permission. The owner drives multiple Broncos. If you're in Western Washington look them up.

Here's a photo of my Badlands they put together. Tires, wheels, suspension lift and steering upgrade. Not to mention servicing the pots/boxes. Also my buddies Toyota they built

That setup could get a ticket in California, believe it or not.

:California Code, Vehicle Code - VEH § 27600.
No person shall operate any motor vehicle having three or more wheels, any trailer, or semitrailer unless equipped with fenders, covers, or devices, including flaps or splash aprons, or unless the body of the vehicle or attachments thereto afford adequate protection to effectively minimize the spray or splash of water or mud to the rear of the vehicle and all such equipment or such body or attachments thereto shall be at least as wide as the tire tread.

I just checked, and that setup is also illegal on Washington roads. Vehicle code reads the same and you can receive a $136 ticket for violating the Washington fender law.

Also in case anyone didn't know, speeding and murder are also illegal.

Stupid reply. Everyone knows that.

I think everyone is certainly entitled to make their own informed decisions. Everyone doesn’t know their state's vehicle code or expect the $136 ticket.. That's why Officer Friendly is asking: "do you know why I stopped you?" When he already knows...

Not good to reply: "was it the murder or the speed?" 🤣

One of the differences, however, is while it is almost guaranteed to get you pulled over in CA, it is very unlikely you will get pulled over for just that in WA. And much less likely to result in a ticket.

@iamcris
Thanks for the tip on the shop!
