Anyone have experience with handheld radios? I don't want/need a CB or stationary unit, but something I can use in and out of vehicle, or while camping. Any recommendations?
Was looking at Motorola T260 or Baofang UV5RA...

The Motorola is a GMRS like we were discussing earlier. You need an FCC license but it's quick and easy to get. Should work for what you want to do.

The Baofeng is a Ham radio so you'd need to take a test to get your license.

The only portable CB I can think of is the Midland 75-822. There's probably more, I just don't know about them.

No need for FCC license as the Motorola is under 2W.

@McCracken , I’ve had great luck with the uv5r. Cheap, easy to program. Interchangeable with the GMRS/FRS/HAM and doubles as a police scanner. Best bang for the buck, just stay off the HAM frequencies if you don’t have an operators license.

Well, this would be a good use of one of the aux switches on the BD. Looking at some of the reviews at the link it should be easy to hide one of these away.
my buddy has his powered into the aux switches on his JLUR, should be just as easy on the bronco.

Back in high school that was the way all my buds and I kept in contact when we were out and about. I know- I am old. No cell phones back then.

Certainly thinking about it for this new rig though. I don't have any recommendations but will be interested to see what people share.
I was close with some of the driver's that I wasn't related to at a mail contractor I worked at. If I was off and saw them radio shenanigans ensued ?. Even after I left we would put out calls to each other occasionally.

That article is basically saying buy a ham radio and use it illegally...
I was more interested in the FRS (non-license) as opposed to the GMRS (license).

The GMRS radios are versatile enough to interact with the FRS, and while you are “legally” required to use a license, I have yet to see that enforced in any type of capacity.
