Wheels and tire shipping help!

I am trying to ship a set of wheels and tires from texas to Washington and would love some input. Has anyone ever done this before? If so, who should I use and any approximations on price?

I’m figuring on a package 36x36x13 and 90#, should be about right for SAS wheels and tires. Discount tire ships with FedEx, but based on what I just ran it’s too much money. UPS Ground is showing $290 each retail. Contacting a freight carrier and putting the tires on a pallet might be better. 20 years ago I shipped a few sets UPS for $120 per set of 4. I had a set of just wheels shipped to me by a member here last spring, it was $42 each for five at a UPS retail location. I could’ve sent them for $25 each through pirate ship.com.

For packaging individual tire/wheels I used multiple layers of cardboard front and back to protect the wheel with a microfiber towel taped over the wheel face, then used the cling wrap over the whole thing to keep the cardboard on.

Good luck, but at these shipping costs I can’t see it making financial sense.

Try and get a quote with Central Transport. They are cheap and reliable. Unless you know someone who has an account with other major carriers you will be paying an arm and a leg to get those shipped.

Look into LTL freight shipping. I've shipped whole bumpers for $150.

Edit* I just ran the calculation for a pallet with them stacked and sheesh its like $1200-$1500... Not economical at all lol...

I've used Greyhound Bus for larger items.
Their option that is not on a guaranteed time frame is the cheapest option.

If you have a Fastenal in the area they will ship to another Fastenal location. It's been a while but I've used them for shipping bulkheads, bumpers and other large items at a reasonable price. With that being said, I wouldn't dare guess a cost these days.

Last I used them was 2016 to ship tires mounted to 20" wheels from Houston to dc for $250.

Make sure they are totally enclosed in cardboard

FEDEX is reporting of business is WAY down and I wonder why. When rates have jumped by such a significant amount no one will ship anything.

+1 on Shipnex. I got a quote from CA to TX for ~$300 for a set of rims. I did a lot of research and this was the best option. You can sign up for free and get a quote instantly. When the rims arrived, it came thru FEDEX if I recall.

We can't make any promises on what they will say, but if you have a discount tire store location near you it may be worth stopping by and talking with the manager to see if they can offer any assistance.

Just tried a quote on shipnex. Over a $1000 fuel surcharge!
