Okay, eventually might go ahead and Accept the 4.2.3 Download and see what happens. But if it bricks my Bronco then I'll know who to blame
lol do it at your own risk, I have the benefit of working on these things daily. So if something goes wrong with my updates I can usually easily fix things.

The "power up" might be an installer package that updates other packages like SYNC, drivetrain or whatever. I don't know exactly what SYNC is (😲), but I guess that's related to just the media head etc. 🤷‍♂️ I also work in IT (software engineer), and what can look inscrutable to others oftentimes does make sense, if you only know... lol

And y'know, the poor 0... 4.0.23... 4.23...

Here's the worry with Ford's SYNC 4 system :

As programs and OS get larger & larger there's a tendency to become unmanageable. Some say inevitability to become dysfunctional.

You've heard the Software "Peter Principle" :
"Your program will rise to the level of incomprehensibility."

There's a worry that Ford's SYNC4 system may have reached this point of marginal return or no return. At some point they can no longer make changes without breaking it, and becomes too risky for users/owners to accept updates.

Apple Computer went thru this with their Mac OS. They eventually did a complete overhaul converting the Mac to a UNIX based OS. Ford may need something similar, and more software expertise to keep SYNC4 functional as it expands.

Do you know if SYNC4 is developed in-house by Ford. Or maybe subbed out to professional software engineering companies ?

Totally agree; tech debt and all. It accumulates, especially if the project wasn't conceptualized properly early on. Once keeping the code working takes more effort than the added feature(s), the project has approached stasis and will begin degrading. I honestly don't know I'd want to be working on it, personally.

Ford uses an outside, I think offshored professional services company AFAIK. I've heard it's name mentioned, but don't recall.

And here's another comparison. Checked our '22 BD last evening. (not the '23 BD posted yesterday)

Our Bronco screen "Update Details" says :
- "An update requires your permission to download."
- "Ford Power-Up 4.2.3 - Ready to Download"

Update Details a.jpg

From the Ford website "SYNC Current Version" says 4.0.23159
(same as your Wildtrak says 4.0.23159 )
Ford website.jpg

And our Bronco screen "About SYNC" says :
- SYNC 4, Software Version: 23159_PRODUCT

About SYNC.jpg

Maybe as @userdude suggested yesterday - maybe "Ford Power-Up" and "SYNC Current Version" could be two different software pkgs ?

And @da_jokker posted above - his Bronco says Ford Power-Up 4.2.2 but the Ford website says SYNC Current Version 4.0.23159

I don't have FordPass app. No phone ever connected
This is really helpful - this means version "4.0.22291" = 4.2.2 in my case. Thanks a ton for doing that homework sir! Now the big question is whether to turn on the WiFi and turn auto updates on to do the deed of upping to 4.2.3.

So any opinions on whether I should update or not? I have 4.0.22294.
Thanks
Yes absolutely. Every version gets better, especially car play connection speed and stability in last couple updates. It is highly advisable to ignore the tin foil hat crowd around here.

Funny! Guess I started a monster with this thread but I appreciate all the varying opinions on it and the detail that some have put into their responses. Some people have had negative experiences with the upgrades....so you have to place value in that. As I referenced iOS upgrades earlier on, the same goes here.....sometimes upgrades aren't magical - that's what I'm coming away with.

Unfortunately the idea of just removing the "0" doesn't work

In our '23 BD -
"Update Details" screen says "Ford Power-Up 4.2.2.1"
& Ford website says "SYNC Version 4.0.23096"

@userdude could be right that "Ford Power-Up" and "SYNC Version" are two different software pkgs
Ok gotcha.....yep userdude most likely correct then.

Updates are rolled out. Not everyone will get them at the same time. I’m sure a lot of people are still behind 4.2.1.1
The head unit of my base Bronco built end of April 2023 shows v4.2.1.1. I never connected the Bronco to a wifi source, sync, Ford app, etc. So maybe that version is what was there when I picked up the vehicle back in June when delivered? (Bronco has been working fine and I have no inclination to update it for now.)

Also while trying to find a chrono list of Bronco update versions and what functionality changed/fixed, I found this list which doesn't seem accurate for Bronco. It shows last Bronco applicable update as 2.6.2 back in May 2022. https://ford.fandom.com/wiki/Ford_Power-Up_version_history

Anyone know do we have a comprehensive list somewhere of each version change and what was changed for Bronco?

You don’t need wifi for the updates. It uses the built in modem for them. Yours has updated.
