Bought my wife a new ‘25 OBX. It’s our first time owning a vehicle shaped like a shoebox, so the amount of bugs on the windshield became an instant issue.

Hood deflector was the obvious fix, and I used the Ford OE model. It greatly reduced the bug issue. However, fixing one issue created another; it whistled like a SOB above 40mph. I didn’t think it would bug me, but I couldn’t stand it.

After a little testing using automotive masking tape, I isolated the source of the whistle. It was definitely the airflow on the very front edge of the deflector, in the little void between the edge and where the 3M tape sits. When I covered that with masking tape, it was quiet as a mouse.

So, I went to work finding a solution. I landed on a specific shape of weatherstripping with 3M tape on one edge. The 3M tape sits against the painted lip underside of the hood and the rubber weatherstrip wraps up around the edge of the hood deflector. Used a heat gun to warm everything up, adhesion promoter on the underside of the hood, and patience getting it to sit just right working it across.

The result looks like it came that way from the factory and the whistle is 100% gone, up to a speed of 87 mph on my test drive. (Any faster and I would have time traveled back to 1955. IYKYK)

Very happy with it. For any of you experiencing a whistle that bugs you, 9 out of 10 aerodynamics engineers recommend this solution and the 10th one is deaf. 😎

Here’s the product I used at $12.99 for 20 feet: Weatherstripping

Good solution. Interesting. I have the same oem deflector and don’t notice the whistling.

I just ordered mine, we'll see if it whistles. But first I need to fix the driver-side back window noise and the cargo-area noise.

No whistles at all from mine. Perhaps the original owner installed it incorrectly.
I’m the original owner and installed it. Took a lot of time to make sure it was lined up perfect with masking tape. There really isn’t but one way to install it, short of sticking it higher or lower on the hood. I’m surprised others don’t whistle, but it might be one of those things where 1/16” one way or the other makes just enough difference on the airflow for a whistle. Maybe finicky.

You probably have better hearing than I do. There's so many noises with mine I won't notice another one!

I am shocked no one has came out with an actual spoiler that screws in to the black tie downs in the front. Make to paint match, might make a world of a difference with the air flow going over the windshield. I think the ford Baja bronco has one.

I've had the OEM deflector for awhile now and no whistles but as Langwilliams pointed out with all the other noises I doubt I would ever hear anything.

Has anyone ever seen a wind tunnel test or any study that indicates that these things have any positive effect? Everything I can find online suggests that these make no meaningful difference to the airflow. I can't find anything on YouTube or vendor websites to support that there is science behind these. Obviously, it protects the front hoodline that is now covered with plastic, but it's very very hard to believe that a 1/2" lip on the plastic shield would make a measurable difference on what hits your windshield. And, expecting it to impact the trajectory of a rock is utter nonsense. That said, if people like the way it looks, then have at it.

I don’t have a wind tunnel, but I know that the BAOW coefficient was reduced by a substantial amount as soon as the deflector went on.

(BAOW = Bug Asses on Windshield)

Will it alter the trajectory of a big rock? I dunno. I would think it might be enough to help smaller ones ride a little lift of air current.

I think hood deflectors look like crap, to be honest, but the beating this vertical windshield on a shoebox was taking was pretty nuts.

Basically the flow is tripped and then goes turbulent with the stream then flowing up Its is similar to a Gurney Flap in my mind

Yeah, I couldn't agree more. A whole lot less bugs hitting the windshield.

I haven't had a whistling issue but due to the turbulence the deflector is creating, my caps on the windshield header that cover the bolts for a lightbar/roof rack rattle like crazy at highway speeds. Constant rattle doing down the road.
