Kelley Blue Book’s annual Best Resale Value Awards recognizes the 10 individual vehicles that are projected to retain the highest percentage of their original manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP). This list represents the best of the best, and the threshold for this honor is high.

These vehicles retain their value better than 95% of all other models. While the average new vehicle will be worth about 42.4% of its original sticker price after 60 months, these 10 vehicles will return an average of about 59% to their owners’ pockets. For a $35,000 vehicle, that works out to a meaningful difference of nearly $6,000 over a 5-year buy-own-sell ownership cycle. Recouping more money when you sell a vehicle can mean a bigger down payment and lower monthly payments on your next one. Imagine having an extra $6,000 to put down on your next vehicle. That’s why choosing a car with good resale value can often save you more money in the long run than chasing big rebates and other incentives.

If you read the original article, you would see it is a trend projection based on (limited) available data. An automotive piece meant to focus on selling cars. Nothing more. Did you get caught up in the marketing moment?

Bronco resale data is artificially inflated by high demand of a new vehicle in short supply. The resale prices are beginning to drop, modestly, as supply starts filling out dealer lots. Since the Feds aren't dropping the rate yet, and probably not until July, I anticipate 2024 will bring a good supply to dealer lots. ADMs are already disappearing rapidly. If Ford releases gen6.5 in 2025, rebating may jump in late Q4 to clear out the lots. Then we will get a better projection in a trued-up market.

I understand the projection is just that, a projection, but there also is the total picture that will muddy these projections. My base model was listed at $29,300 (I just missed the $28,500 window) I added only three, options, mod bumper w/ bash plates, the aux switches and Sasquatch. Which also required Advance 4WD, so a fourth option? Total after all PP was around $40K including destination.

Now the new base, a BB, is $12K or so higher, that's more than I paid with Sasquatch and my options, and in five years the new base will be???

So a base model will hold a higher percent of it's value than a higher priced or loaded model. It's been that way with Jeeps for years, especially since they were the only game in town. A five year old stripper, was holding close to 80% of their original list price and some got those at a discount, so they lost little value on actual price paid.

I'd be more interested in seeing the projections on a 2021 five years out to 2026 using up to date sales data and needing less then two years of projecting, and same for 2022, that would give a good base line to see long term value.

Not to mention that KBB is just what dealers use to screw people over on trades. NADA is the real man behind the curtain.

This feels like clickbait. Some of the data does not pass the smell test. Neither the F150 nor the Wrangler are on they list, and they historically hold value extremely well (I sold my 10 year old Wrangler for around 45% of MSRP). And the Bronco "data" is all pandemic numbers.

That list of cars is a bit of an odd lot. It does have some of the traditional nameplates and models you would expect but also some that are next to never on a list of cars with great resale value. And one car that is glaringly missing... the Wrangler, that has traditionally been one of the absolute best to hold resale value.

Raising the price $14k has a weird effect of driving up resale.
