While changing a few weeks ago at 15k miles I noticed some drops of transmission fluid that had formed on the bottom of the bell housing area. I wiped them and checked a couple of days later and they were back. I didn’t have any spots on my garage floor though so it wasn't a large leak.

I took the Bronco in a couple of weeks back to have the leak checked out, thinking it was a bad seal or something. It was still only dripping a few drops each day. After 2 weeks in the shop, I received an update last week that the transmission tech couldn't figure out where the leak was coming from and he contacted Ford. Ford told him to pull the transmission and inspect it. They also told me at that time that it was leaking pretty bad and there was a large puddle under the lift when they came in one morning.

Today I got an update that a bushing or bearing (the service advisor wasn't sure which one the tech told him) had turned sideways in the transmission and tore up the gears and other bearings and such. He said the tech has ordered over 30 components and will be rebuilding it when the parts arrive. He said this is the 2nd or 3rd one they have seen like this. The weird thing is that it drove completely normal and I never heard any strange noises or anything that would indicate that bearings and gears in my transmission were being destroyed. I mentioned that to the service advisor today and he said that's how the others have been too, no noise or drive issues. Looks like I'll be without my Bronco for a couple more weeks.

Anyone else ever hear of this? Should I be concerned with the rebuilt transmission going forward? I'm surprised they didn't just replace the transmission and send the old one back to Ford for teardown and analysis since this seems to not be an isolated incident.

Pump bushing? I can see the bushing going bad and having metal contamination. Depending on what those 30 parts are, the powertrain cost cap we have to fill out basically tells us if it reaches the threshold for replacement or repair. I was told it factors in each dealers labor and parts markups but not sure what % it takes to put over the top. The other factor it takes into account is part and complete replacement unit availability. If one of the parts on the tech list is on galactic backorder and can't be obtained from another dealer, they can get the blessing for then next level service assembly (complete unit).

Another good reason to change your own oil. If I hadn’t been under there and saw that small leak, I would have kept driving it thinking nothing was wrong. Who knows what would have happened if the transmission grenaded while going 75 on the highway? Nothing good, that’s for sure!

Curious why they wouldn’t just replace the assembly.
Anything under 3/36 with an internal failure qualifies for LTIS (low time in service) which means they could just put a new transmission in it. The only thing I can think of is that the assembly is back ordered and would take longer to get than just rebuilding it.
Also curious what bushing or bearing failed. I rebuild these daily, but have no idea what they’re referring to. Certainly no common failures on these 🤷‍♂️

When the advisor said he has had 2 or 3 others, did the subject come up of which year , models, or engines were affected. What is yours?

Confused how an internal part failed ( not fully understanding the actual part”)and created a way for transmission fluid to leak out. Also fail to understand how a failed part moved and caused other internal damage and the transmission had no usage issues. New one on me.

What a bummer but glad you found it before anything major. Best wishes for a speedy and complete repair. Thanks for posting, also great photos.

No, it was Friday afternoon and he and I were both in a hurry. I plan to have a more in-depth conversation with him next week. Mine is a 2021, 6 cylinder, automatic, BaseSquatch

Those are my big questions as well, which I will be asking the tech. There certainly wasn’t a hole punched in the case anywhere and the initial leak was very small, like a couple drops per day. When they told me they had a huge puddle of fluid under it a week or so after I dropped it off I was really confused as to why it would all of a sudden let go while sitting in a shop and not being driven.

And even on the way to take it to the dealer the shifts were normal and smooth, there were no driveline vibrations or noises, which I would expect if there were something loose or banging around inside the trans damaging the gears and other components.

Funny you say that. They did contact me and after I gave them my information they provided some super helpful information about the child safety lock recall 🤪. See the screenshot below.

On the bright side, I was also informed by the service advisor today that they took care of the recall while my Bronco was sitting there waiting for parts this week. So, I got that going for me, which is nice.

I guess it’s the Ford equivalent of showing up at the ER with an open chest would and having them let you know you are due for a flu shot and then asking you if you’ve noticed any other medical issues. Well done Ford social media team, well done indeed!
