I'm looking to put on new wheels and tires. I have NO idea how I'm supposed to know what tire I want or like without driving on them... which is rather cost prohibitive.

So I'm looking for any advice on my current thoughts!

Currently looking at Method 703 wheels as they are a classic. If anyone has other wheel recs (bronze color preferred) please feel free to drop those! Wondering what offset I should pick depending on my tire choice below:

For tires, I can't decide between 285/75R17 and 315/70R17. I'm not worried about looks (plus in reality its a 33.8 vs 34.4, so wheel well fitment is about equal), moreso whether the wider footprint is worth the trade with handling and mpg - Yes, I do daily my bronco and I use it for overlanding, not recreational offroading. So I feel like I may be just fine with the "pizza cutters".

Anyway, I'm looking at either the Firestone Destination XT or the Yokohama Geolander A/T4 in both sizes. Bonus consideration for the Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus (only a 315 size).

Wondering if anyone has any experience with any of these tires they'd like to share, or if they have tried out 285/75 vs 315/70.

Lastly, if I do end up going to a thinner tire, how should my offset change when ordering new wheels? The methods come in +35 or +0. Ive heard that +35 actually brings in the 315 size tire a bit, so would 285s be noticeably regressed under the sasquatch flare? Would +0 still have them too far out?

Any input is appreciated!!

+0 with the 285 should be about the same as +35 with the 315 in terms of poke. You currently have a sasquatch correct? I would try and get data on actual tread width of those tires. Tread width and section width are not always the same.

You're already running the 315s on your badsas wheels so handling/MPG won't be an issue w/ the 315s. +35 offset would only recess the wheel an additional 5mm compared to your badsas wheels so the 315s would be in just a smidge more under the squatch flares...the 285s on the +35 would be noticeably recessed IMO. If I were going pizza cutter I'd look at a 35 x 10.50 on a +0 offset wheel. No experience with the Firestones or Pirellis...lots of folks running the Geolanders with good reports.

Well the stock Territorys are 54lbs, basically any replacement 315 would be adding 10-15 lbs of tire weight... so im considering a 11.5" width tire to hopefully stay around 60lbs per tire and improve handling compared to a 12.5" width.

Haven't looked as thin as 10.5, ill have to check those out!

In my personal experience Yoko’s run small, just FYI. I don’t have any experience with Firestone. I’m a Kenda fan.

Tires are highly subjective & heavily influenced by personal preference, use case and geographical region. If you share more about how you plan to use your vehicle & in what climate you may get different feedback on tire options. Good luck!

Oh! I was actually looking at the geolandars because they list at 34.1" (closer to stock 34.4) rather than many other 285/75s at 33.8". What size did you have experience with?

And yes good point. Southwest US, overlanding + offroading. The offroading is more about capability to reach remote places (like maze district in canyonlands) rather than recreationally driving up boulders. Thats why I feel an inclination to go thinner while trying to maintain a large diameter.

Definitely want to stay away from any E rated tire for your use, they gonna be heavy.

FWIW i'm looking at weight more than load - e.g. an E-rated Geolandar A/T4 is 60 lbs, and a C-rated Wildpeak A/T4W is 68...

60lbs very good for an E. The E may give you more peace of mind for puncture resistance.

Doing a same matrix of tire-wheel comparisons for a BadSas and looking to buy sometime next year. I’d recommend looking harder for wheel options, as you can save a lot of weight there (that you can put towards the tire, because everything is heavier than the OEM GYs). I liked the Geolander a lot looks-wise, but they’ve not got good reviews for rain, slush or snow. Not sure if that’s an issue for you in SoCal, but it nixed them for me in UT.

I had a set of Geolander MT’s in a 34, I found then to be small.

Based on your region I can not recommend the Kenda Klever RT KR601 more. They are awesome. Maybe more than you want but I have found them to be excellent on the pavement, very good in the snow and awesome
In the Maze.
