If you really don't like the Stinger set up, MTI Acoustics actually makes a similar box that is set up for JL Audio. I know EBay has a seller that makes it he boxes specific to the speaker you want also.

Volume is slightly less than what JL has for their optimal sealed box. But it should work, just get a jigsaw and open it up ever so slightly.

Ya, i actually tried to fit a 12tw1 in mine and it was about 1/4" too deep to mount flush sadly. was very disappointed.

The shallow box is the limiting factor here. No matter if you get a sub that costs $1600 and can handle 1500 watts rms, you’re limited by the air that can be moved in the box. I had a shallow mount down fire box with a kicker and when I switched it out for a proper box with the same sub it hits twice as hard. I understand you are saving space with the stinger but the sub isn’t the limiting factor, the box is.

I'm actually going to try a different route for kicks and wiggles and put in an Infinity REF1200s to compare with my current setup for a more budget friendly replacement. will report back next week when it arrives.

Called Crutchfield today and inquired about exchanging the JL for the Rockford Fosgate. The lady I spoke with made it all very easy. In just under 7 minutes I explained that the JL didn't fit and I wanted to exchange it for the Rockford. While on the phone she sent me an email with a return label, and a shipping confirmation for the Rockford. The subs are the same, the screen is $5 cheaper on the Rockford, the difference was returned to my Paypal. Overall, VERY good interaction with them, and will lead to future shopping.

New sub will be here Tuesday, will try again. Below are the pics, I think it will work. The plastic housing on the back is much smaller than on the JL. I did wire the Phoenix to 4ohm while I had it open, bass seems deeper and better.

I'll say it again, Crutchfield was fantastic to deal with. Came home today around noon, sub sitting on the front porch. Checked my call log from yesterday, and called them a 1:56pm yesterday. Less than 24 hours, and didn't even wait for the return.

Installed just now, and it is far superior to the Phoenix. Hits much harder and deeper. Really glad I upgraded to this sub. Only listened to a few songs in the garage, drive around later and see how it sounds in the open road. Screen sticks out a bit more than the Phoenix one did, but not too much.

One thing I did forget to mention is that the holes for the Rockford did not line up with the holes on the box for the Phoenix. They were outward about 1/2". I just used 8 self tapping wood screws to attach the sub. Since it is pressed/partical board there is a chance they could come loose.

The sub came with 8 fasteners that attached on the back side, and hold the screw from the front. Metal on metal contact that way. I didn't feel like redrilling holes, and lining all the fasteners up today. Its rainy and cold, maybe on a warm day when I have some time to kill I will. Attached is a pic, the barbs are pressed flat though. Something to keep in mind if anyone else changes from the Phoenix to another brand.

Awesome and glad to hear! I'll report back with my "cheap" infinity upgrade but have a feeling it will be better as well.

Does the tailgate mounted sub cause any rattling inside or out? I’m interested but I absolutely hate rattling. In have sound deadening on my cargo floor and side panels.

Right now I have a small sealed Kicker 10” solobaric box that hits really hard and I installed quick disconnects for when I need space but interested in other options.

There was a few rattles. Biggest oddly enough was on the inside of the handle mechanism on the tailgate. Taking off the black plastic grill looking piece to the right of the tailgate sub enclosure, has the handle. Two little black pieces were rattling (pic below with arrows), I used electrical tape and wrapped around them to stop it. The white housing was rattling on the black part.

I have a Ford security enclosure, yesterday I noticed it was rattling too. Even though all bolts were as tight as possible, there was still some rattle. Mostly from the top shelf to the back of it. I took the entire thing apart today and lined all connecting edges with this stuff. Put it all back together and seems to have done the trick.

When inside the vehicle I do not hear any rattles. As I said it is MUCH harder hitting. Resting my arm on the door when driving I can feel it easily. However, standing outside by the tailgate I can hear something, inside the tailgate, somewhere on the back. I have a RC tailgate support, not sure if that has something to do with it. If I press on the tailgate to the right of the tire, it goes away. I have to be pretty close to hear it though. Its not like people can hear it just walking by. Not the end of the world but I may one day try to fix it.

Thanks for the reply! I may look into this setup right now I am running a small box but it hits very hard. I have no rattles even with the slide out tailgate installed. I used quick disconnects in the case I need to remove it and I did not remove the stock sub either so I will have a little bass lol.

Here is the current sub:

Did you happen to measure the depth of the inside of the box? Or the thickness of the wood?

Using the hood of the Mustang as a work bench hurts to look at. 🤦‍♂️

Sorry, no I didn't. The specs are online though.

Yeah I know... She's a daily driver though. Didn't think the box would hurt too bad.
