I put a piece of rubber sheeting between my box and the tailgate. This way there won't be any adhesive on the paint, and the box isn't touching the paint. Besides the plastic cover sticks out further than the painted panel below, so this helps to square up the box.
Most of the inside of the tailgate is full of bracing and honestly I could not see anywhere flat enough to put dynamat. Perhaps with a spray? The only rattle I get is immediately around the handle, and only with certain songs/frequencies. So eventually I may put a bit in that area.

I feel the weight of the spare tire, coupled with the weight of the sub and box (30 lbs for mine) gives the tailgate so much mass that it doesn't rattle or vibrate.

Which box is that? JL for the win!

Anybody know the weight of the Stinger box? I can't find it on their website.

I definitely trust JL Audio, but I don't have much knowledge about Stinger and the Phoenix Gold speaker. Comparable?

That's very interesting. So the plastic shell goes back on over the wood enclosure? Pretty clean if so. Of course this thing has to be from Florida. The cost of shipping to me in Seattle likely exorbitant.
Just did a shipping quote on their site and it was $50 UPS Ground from FL to CA. Prob pretty close to what you'd be looking at so it's not too too bad.

Edit: Also I just reached out to them to confirm, but I believe that price also includes the subwoofer it's custom-made for. So not terrible for the Box + Sub shipped for a fully hidden setup. Just need to run the amp and connect it all!

Here's another option that's very similar - this one I know for sure comes with the sub at this price.

Man, that's a lot of plywood!

I like the Bronco grill idea better. Hidden and very clean looking.
That one also hides behind the OEM plastic - it doesn't have the Bronco grille though.

To be honest, I'm not a huge huge fan of the 3D-printed acrylic-looking grille and how it just screws in. What I'd do with that setup with mount some nice front grille mesh and bend/cut it to shape to then epoxy it onto the back of the OEM plastic.

The Kicker 8" L7 does look like it'll provide plenty of bass and round out the system. It's definitely not an audio show truck, but you'll play any genre and make a stank face when the bassline hits.

Interesting to see that the same spot on my CO is also not painted well! WTF!?

Also, that empty space under the door latch bump out is the perfect spot for a custom sub. Years ago I had a powered sub in an empty, unusable space over the rear passenger tire in the back of an Explorer.

It could be that unpainted area is where the door is held as it goes through the paint line. Actually it could be where the fuel lid is held during painting? I will have to look at the paint jigs for that, we make all of that assembly where I work.
The handle area of the tailgate is the one area that isn't braced well and vibrates. So I would think a box there, would not only be pretty small, but would need to be dynamated really well.

I may copy this! Did they have that box in stock or did you order and supply them with box/speaker?
only commenting to say "nice buck"!
