2 door Midpoint for 2 post lift?

Gents! New '24 Black Diamond 2.7 2 door here. Searches not productive RE: location of midpoint for 2 post lift.

I have a new custom workshop built around a BendPak 9K lb. lift. Want to get it right without fiddling around, no guessing.

The lift points are noted in the manual. It’s on the frame rail. (Spoken from BendPak XPR10AS owner)

Not looking for the jacking points. Already have them, thanks anyway. Need the center of balance point of the vehicle for fore-aft location on the lift. It's specific for 2 door vs. 4 door.

Hey, thanks to the forum brain trust from a forum Newb! I expect to learn something here every day...Even when I answer my own Q's... ;-)

here's something I didn't fully understand previously (see below). In my case, this is good stuff to establish before first lift of the new BD! Per my OP and Q above, my lift is a BendPak XPR-9S. It's an asymmetrical lift. I had been prepared to balance the fore-aft load 50/50, per best practices with symmetrical lifts, assuming same standard balance practices. WRONG. This fails to take full advantage of the design benefits and intent of the lift.

NOTE: The BendPak manual DOES NOT provide fore-aft load balance guidance beyond a general diagram of a van on the lift as an example indicating 3500/5500 lb. fore-aft balance and no specific reference language. (Either too many or not enough liability attorneys IMHO). ;-Q

So now that I've opened a bit of a Pandora's box for myself... With your indulgence, now I'll attempt to close it. For future reference, particularly for short wheelbase 2 door owners, there may be value to share:

Understanding the asymmetrical car lift

Asymmetrical car lifts differ from symmetrical lifts in the total distance you need to drive over them. This difference exists because the front arms are only a little shorter than the back arms. The columns were turned by 30 degrees in order to correct and balance the vehicles properly.

Characteristics that stand out

Landmark Tools notes a list of defining features for asymmetrical car lifts as well, which includes:

• Designed after the symmetric lift to accommodate lighter-built vehicles
• Features 30-degree turn capabilities in the column – allowing for the vehicle to be offset on the lift
• Allows for easier entry and exit with door openings, minimizing chances of damaged doors from banging against the post
• Load is 1/3 of the vehicle on the front arms and 2/3 of the vehicle on the rear arms
• Lifting capacity ranges from 7,000 pounds to 10,000 pounds
• Front arms are shorter than rear arms

Disadvantages to keep in mind

A few disadvantages exist for shops considering asymmetrical car lifts. Landmark Tools notes that these lifts can specifically pose issues for vehicles with short wheelbases.

Landmark Tools also says that a short-wheelbase vehicle can become unstable and dangerous when an asymmetric lift isn’t centered correctly. Any sudden shifts or movement caused by this instability can pose serious safety risks for the technicians working in your shop.

When choosing a car lift, you need to factor in these details and account for the types of vehicles your business repairs.

The longitudinal center of gravity (CG) of an automobile can be calculated using wheel scales, which measure the weight distribution of the vehicle. The process involves several steps:

Measure the weight of each wheel for each wheel (Wf, Wr, Wl, and Wr).

Calculate the total weight (W):

Sum the weight readings from each wheel scale: W = Wf + Wr + Wl + Wr

Calculate the longitudinal CG position a = (Rr * Wr - Rf * Wf) / W


Rr is the ground reaction force of the rear axle weight

Rf is the ground reaction force of the frontal axle weight

This should get you in the ballpark. My Bronco below as an example.

Since I don't happen to have wheel scales, the ANI chart and Omni calculator are just the ticket. Ran the numbers. Surprising enough (to me), my fore-aft balance point is a bit behind where I would have guessed: 44.55 in. aft of front axle centerline. This is what I was after, no guessing. Mucho appreciados!
