I am driving on the desert, just dune bashing in Dubai. We need to keep RPMs high, and for us is very important to drive 4L as we have hard breaks but still need high rpms and we cannot stop to switch to 4H. I was surprised by the limit of the 7 Gear as I can only reach 70 km/h, but we usually need far more than that in the big dunes....

I saw a topic where all people started questioning why to do it...I hope my explanation is clear; if not, I will be happy to explain in detail by private.

The question here is, has anyone in the forum did it before? I am getting crazy to find how to do it as it is very important for our comunity in UAE.

Thanks so much.

So you are saying the Auto trans will limit you to no higher than 7th gear when in 4L? I hadn't noticed and would come up rarely in my type of driving except out in Utah climbing rocks and the transitioning to a long sand run. I could see it being important for you. In my old Jeep Rubicon with 4spd auto I'd be in OD 4L quite a bit.

I've noticed for a while now the transmission will default to starting in second when in 4L, it used to start in first, which was often annoying. Now if I want first I have to select it which I find fine.

Good question, looking forward to answers

Seems like low is likely unnecessary considering how far through the gears you're running..
My thoughts exactly. Why not just run 4H in Sport mode?

If y’all have not experienced a dead stop start 4L vs 4H on sand in a drag race type situation, there’s a big difference depending on the sand. It’s impressive actually even with the 2.3.

If 4L/7th gets you to 70kmph/43mph, then 4L/10th will get you to 110kmph/68mph. What's the target? If it's still not fast enough, 4H with lower axel ratios are needed.

If you aren’t needing to go super fast, I prefer 4L in the sand. In manual you can keep your engine in the power and transmission temps lower. Lots of gear options for downshifting going up the hills

From OP: " I can only reach 70 km/h, but we usually need far more than that in the big dunes"

Exactly. I can’t see the driving application here, but then I’m also not heavily experienced on sand dunes. I guess if you need to get up a dune starting in 4L, then build up speed to over 40 mph to continue up, maybe that’s a thing but a lot more people should be chiming in saying yeah this is a thing. But what 4WD vehicles go over 40 in 4L by design?

Over 40 mph in 4L must put drivetrain components seriously into stress. Bronco is limited to what, 25 mph in the owner manual, I can’t remember.

You've actually brought to light the elephant in the room..

Isn't the UAE filled with 3k hp sand racers and all sorts of insane shit?

Bronco seems like a total poverty rig in that corner of the world from what I've seen.. OP must not have any of that big oil money 😋🤑

I was out there years ago, and we ran a stock Hilux and got around fine. But yeah if he is racing and trying to keep up with those buggies then it‘s not a conversation we can realistically have.

I am surprised how the people that has no experience in Dune bashing in GCC teach drivers with years of experience driving on the sand....The question on this topic is not about what is the best configuration for Dune bashing or if I need this or that... the question is simple, can we unlock 8, 9, 10 gear in 4 L.

For your information, all toyotas, Ninssans, even my modified Cayenne can go full gears in 4L (Some needs to be programmed but can do it).

We need it, the torque you get to start the dunes with soft sand requires 4 L, and for the big dunes, we need to go above 120Kmh to not loose the momentum and go down....you need to -float- over the dunes to keep going, and you can achieve it only by going fast. On the other hand, you will have to suddently break and go slow, but not possible to stop, go N and then put 4L and then change again 4H. We drive 120Kmhat 7-8 PSI, switching between sides of the dunes....is something different, please just trust me when I say we really need it.

We need this, this is not a question. The question here is: Did anyone unlock it? And in this case, How?

When you put 4L, there are multiple advantages, from engine map to Kill swich capability (In 4H is all the time bipping and giving alerts...)... Removing the traction control by long press is not enough for sand dunes, the last week almost roll over at the empty quarter because even after the long press traction removal, the breaks acctivated in a very bad angle with a very soft dune....with 4L I can engage the Kill switch, with 4H...no way.
