Hello All,
Our team was putting together a lighting set up that seemed to be popular in the camping/ overlanding world for SUVs. We figured we would do a bit of a write up on it to give some ideas to others. This is a great solution for those who have a tailgate table for camping. In general, this light set up is amazing to add light to lowlight situations which is more common than we would all like to admit on these Broncos.
Items used:
Heretic dome light - diffused
Heretic dome light - red
~ 10 ft of red and black wire
male & female connectors
butt connectors
zip-ties
electrical tape
notes: We tied the wires in with our dual battery system with Dakota lithium batteries. So the length of wire will be different than your set up. There is Aux 6 that is wired to the passenger rear wheel well, so you can tie into that if you want to use it. We highly recommend tying in this wire to a dual battery or a hot wire that always provides power. This way the button on the heretic dome light is what controls it being on or off.
First, you want to get the Dome light mounted onto this plastic housing. It is just snapped in with plastic clips so carefully remove the housing, drill 2 holes per dome light, use some small hardware to mount to the plastic housing. Once that is done, get the housing back onto the window. If you have the chance, drill a bigger hole between the two to route the wires under and out the factory cut out location.
Second, get your wiring connected to factory tails from the dome light, we wrapped ours in this protecting electrical tape. we added zip-ties to some spots connecting to the wires of the wiper motor. We will follow that to the inside of the bronco.
Third, same idea, keep following the factory wiper motor wire all the way to the inside of the cab, we zip-tied some spots to keep it high and tight.
Fourth, unbolt the plastic cover for the wiper motor wire and washer fluid hose, hide your wires through there and drop it down to the tub of the Bronco. There was this factory duct tape that was holding the wires in the housing, we peeled it up, added our wire in, and put it back. Bolt the housing back up. After this, right where the disconnecting parts of the wires and washer hose are, we added our male and female connectors, this way you can disconnect all 3 parts when you want to remove the hardtop. While our Bronco will never see the hardtop removed, this is a good add for those who do take their hardtop off.
Fifth, This is where we routed our wire down to our Goose Gear seat delete (60% side) this houses our ARB twin air compressor, Blue sea terminal powered by our Dakota lithium and REDARC charger. Once you have it connected to power, test it before putting everything back together.
Now you have a dome light for camping! Also for those wondering why we have a red light, we use this light if bugs are present so that the bright white light does not attract a swarm of bugs at night. You will thank us later with the red light! Let us know if you have any questions!
