Yes it’s a design feature. They default to auto with every shutdown.

I am not sure about defaulting to auto, but if you set the selector switch to Auto they will only come on when they need to. I leave it on Auto all the time.

Two automated systems involved. One guesses if it is dark enough to warrant having the "night" lighting activated, including headlights. The second is the high/low setting of the headlights.

I manually switch the headlights to manual operation when I start up in the morning, because the computer sucks at figuring out when high beams are appropriate. It does a pretty good job of deciding when the headlights should be on, with a couple exceptions: starting up in the garage triggers 'night' mode more often than necessary, and in some patchy cloud cover situations it jumps the gun on lighting.

On my badlands, the light switch automatically defaults to auto. The actual headlights don't come on unless it's dark out. In the vehicle settings under lighting, i believe you can turn off the DRL.

I assume you are starting the vehicle in your garage. I would expect your lights to be on until you are out of the garage, and then they turn off…

For the 2021 model at least, the owner's manual specifically states that it is reset to auto every time you start it. I mostly like auto mode, which I also use with my Escape. But on 2-lane roads and on dirt roads with blind corners I want the lights on even if it's bright outside. So then I turn the knob one click clockwise and they're on. The annoying thing about that, though, is that when you turn it off the lights stay on for some reason and it beeps at you when you open the door. I wish it was like my Escape that is set to turn everything off when I turn the key off, regardless of light switch setting.
