We have a Sheltie that has recently developed arthritis in his front right leg. He is 9 years old... will not be jumping in the car.

He can still walk fine but sometimes has trouble getting up from a sitting position.

In general, I am curious to learn what the Bronco community has done for their dogs - how to securely have him either in the passenger side or in the cargo space.

What has your experience been?

Anything we should buy to keep our dog (Charlie) more secure.

The 2nd row is not an option for us since we have two kids that are both in car seats. Taking the seats out and putting them back in several times a day is not an option - if you have kids you know what I mean!

Thanks!

I am by no means an authority on this, but I've had much larger dogs so what I've particularly done has been different.

But my suggestion is get a pet specific basket that you can wrap the seatbelt around. What this will do is keep the basket and therefore the dog from sliding around and if the basket has handles over it, would somewhat keep the dog from being thrown. My assumption is you would rather have the dog next to you. The other alternative (albeit safer IMO) is getting a crate that fits the dog perfectly, meaning it can stand up, lay down, and turnaround, the crate would (ideally) go in the cargo area and strapped down using the four tie downs in the cargo area.

If money is no object, Gunner Dog crates are probably the safest as they can buy, but probably more than most folks need.

I have the JCR rear window Molle pannels and the JCR Pet Divider. This basically creates a dog crate in the cargo area. We also have a harness and tether to the child seat latch on the back of the 2nd row seats.

We have a large Lab/Coonhound mix and this was the only way he fit along with any cargo whatsoever in the back.

Let him ride shotgun, unless he's to uncomfortable, you'll only know by trying.

Did you remove the back seats completely for this set up. I really like it.

I know the second row is not an option for you, but I have an 11-year-old Husky with a bad hip and this is her setup. Maybe you can get some ideas from what other members have done. I hope you figure it out. Your dog is beautiful.

I did. Just me and the dog. No reason to keep the back seats.
