Looking at hard top lifts. I prefer a free standing lift to pulleys and straps. They are quite pricey. I'm wondering if you could take an engine hoist like this and modify it. Anyone done it or have some thoughts? These are from Harbor Freight and under $300.

Haven't used one personally, but I'd be surprised if it goes high enough to reach a roof

I wouldnā€™t believe it would go high enough. Heck a low budget solution would be a come along pulley and some straps.

The max height of that wonā€™t be that much more than the height of the top, the straps will be very tight out to the sides. I donā€™t think it would be a good solution.

If you're going to muscle around an engine lift, you could just take the top off yourself.
It can go high enough if you extend the arm out, but you'd be pumping forever. You'd look like popeye, so i guess it does have its benefits...

Definitely more trouble than it's worth

A guy modified a dry wall hoist. This looks like it may be better suited.

That'd leave indentations in your soundproofing in the top. Depends on what you can live with

I need to see the top in person, but I'll probably do what i did last time and suspend it from ceiling with chains to wood boards underneath.

I like wood boards because then there's is no flex as you do with just straps. The more you can make it so it's as if it is sitting on the ground(or still on bronco) the better

Then i just park in garage with my hood under the top

A lot will depend on your space and abilities.

But if you cant reinvent the wheel, and i don't think you should, just get the harkin and call it a day

Iā€™ve used the Harkin for my JK roof and it worked great.
Itā€™s still hanging in my garage waiting for my EG Basesquatch.

As I mentioned in my first post, the ceiling hoist doesn't work for me and these lifters are so darn expensive that I was trying to figure our a way to modify something less expensive. I'll probably end up biting the bullet and going with this. View attachment 276988 View attachment 276988

Slow down there. You said you have a preference, not that you couldnt do it...
I prefer a free standing lift to pulleys and straps.
If you can't do it then you're going to need some space. At least the new top isn't one piece anymore so that will help. You might get some saw horses to set it on. This is out of my territory of experience. Good luck!

What are you working with?

I really think the $30 kayak hoists will work for a hoist.
