The problem is not only that the springs are too weak and without enough preload, but that they vary significantly from vehicle to vehicle. So, both bad design and bad parts quality control. The latter is why JediMs spacers work in my rig but not nearly as well in his.

...
That is interesting to state that the shim does work(just not nearly as well) in JediMs case. When I read his comment earlier, he stated it didn't work. Yet, the shims do work in your case.

I'll be finding out myself as I'll be receiving a batch soon.

The strike plates allowed me to relocate the spring ends 1/2" from their original location.

Wouldn't a 1/8" stainless cable clamp mounted where the pink arrow points work ? All that's needed is to hold the spring end further up correct ? I ask cause I have the clamps already ,lol.

Having seen his is person, I would call it improved and effective but not perfect. It's effective as prior the slightest nudge to a fully opened lid would result in it falling all the way closed. Now, once past roughly half stroke, his opens the rest of the way under spring assistance.

"Not perfect" kind of depends on what you want. Some may not want it to fully open automatically upk unlatching as mine does.

Thanks for the feedback. I would consider his to be ideal. I just don't want the lid to unexpectedly close on me.

What's best about the shims is that they are non-destructive. They don't work, just chuck the shims in the trash and button up the back cover.

If you get irritated every time the central console lid falls on you, you may find this write-up useful. This modification cost me $8 and took about 15 minutes from start to completion. Now the lid stays upright when open and doesn't slam on me if the car is parked on an incline. Another benefit of this mod is that it allows me to adjust the spring tension if I decide to do so in the future.

For this modification, I used 2 Sliding Screen Door Latch Strike Plates. They are exactly of the same width as the lid hinges. The strike plates are sold as 5 pack, so you can share the expenses with your friend who also owns a Bronco. ;)

I drilled pilot holes in the lid hinges and utilized 4 automotive-grade screws I happen to have had in my garage. I suggest using the screws that are long enough for going all the way through at least one cell in the cell structure.

If you need to increase the spring tension, simply slide the strike plates farther up (in the direction pointed by the strike plate hook).

Here's the part number of the teal clips; just in case some of them break during the removal of the back panel.

The pictures are self-explanatory for getting the idea, but feel free to ask your questions.

Update: I noticed that the strike plates rubbed against the back panel when closing the lid. I shortened the hooks using a Dremel rotary tool and slightly flattened them with a vice and pliers. No more rubbing – everything works perfect now. The lid stays open no matter what angle you leave it at.

Brilliant-and thank you. Just ordered a set of sliding door latches myself. My oldest son said, maybe finding fixes to all these little things is part of the adventure 🤪. Thanks for posting!

Even having had this all apart and trying a couple quick Lego spacer hacks, your (OPs) solution wasn't clear to me until you added the pink arrows. So, anyway, those of you that were confused don't feel dumb...
why would anyone feel dumb for not understanding bad communication

Hmmm, maybe I read it wrong, but some folks sounded a bit embarrassed or ignorant about the whole mod and pictures. Maybe dumb also wasn't the best word choice.
