That's really odd, it shouldn't drop like that unless you're drag racing. I just did a recent test of 87 vs 93 in my truck and there is a slight increase with 93 (but I also added a cat-back exhaust so that might be the increase itself) but not really enough to justify the extra cost. Last year I ran 87 all year, this year I've been trying 93 for a few months (only months since the change to summer gas) and my mpg went from around 18.5 avg to 19 avg comparing May, June and July from the past 2 years. But I put the cat-back exhaust on in Dec last year so that might account for the slight increase. You may have gotten a bad batch of gas to see that big of a drop. Are you looking at actual mpg or the computer estimated mpg?
Not only have I been running 93 octane, I have been running no ethanol 93 octane... But I have not been tracking mileage carefully (it's about 19-20 around town on 35's).
Yeah I’ve been meaning to sit down and run the math to see if the $ premium for 93 is actually getting me more mpg to justify the price or if I’m still saving money at lower $ 87 octane with lower mpg.
Since I mostly city drive it’s probably still 87, but it would be interesting to see the calculation.

I’ve not seen anyone here yet where it has been worth it, strictly speaking dollar-wise. Yes, it’s a bump but not enough to offset the extra cost. Most people run it because they either have a tune and need it, or they just enjoy the bit of hp/torque bump you get even with no tune — and the slight increase in MPG is just a bit of icing on that cake.

Warm to hot weather I run 93.
Cold weather I run 87.
Roadtrips I run 87, since I'm just putting around at highway speeds.
I don't see any real significant difference in MPG.
I can easily tell the performance difference in hot weather.
Seems like we share similar strategies. Does not seem to hurt anything... But I will have to put some more miles on it to know for sure.
I’m on my 2nd tank of 93 and have lost 2-3 mpg. My usual commute I get 19-19.4 mpg and my first tank of 93 I was just over 17. I was a little more aggressive on the throttle in the beginning so I knew that could have made the difference, but I still felt like it should have been closer. I filled up Friday with 93 and drove to the Texas Off Roadeo yesterday. It was a 130 mile round trip with speed limits ranging from 55-65 and I got right at 19 mpg. On a drive with similar distance, speed limits, hills, etc.. I got 22.4 on 87, that drive also had 20 mph wind gusts while yesterday there was no wind at all.
I do like the way it runs but for the extra cost, decrease in fuel economy, and great performance either way there’s no need for me to burn the extra cash. Any acceleration needed for hills or stop and go really seems to burn more fuel comparatively. I thought it would be the same or maybe even better because I’ve noticed around 2 mpg better in our Expedition when running 93.

I wonder if the computer needs resetting to get the best results with the higher octane fuel. Also curious how the difference between winter and summer formulations play into this.

One thing to check would be Ethanol content - apparently Bronco is very sensitive to this and if you are less than E10 it will tank your mileage.
I just filled up today after going back to 87. I ran 93 for 4-5 months but some of that was in the middle of cooler weather and winter gas so not really a good comparison to the 87 from last year during the first 1000 mile break in. So my last tank of 93 was 18.18 mpg in late June early July and going back to 87 in July came out to 18.25 mpg so pretty much the same. Same weather conditions and the same driving with no highway trips, all local under 55 mph. I thought for sure I would see a .5 to 1 mpg increase going to 93 but there was no difference for me.
