Ford filed a patent for a rooftop battery extender. See patent image below.

Admin Edit:

The roof-mounted backup battery is shown on a Ford Bronco. The battery plugs into a charge port located on the passenger-side rear fender in lieu of the gas cap. The patent filing indicates that the battery pack would apply to plug-in hybrid vehicles and EVs, including for offroad use.

I would think Hybrid and/or EV options are absolutely in the works. Some will like them, some will hate them (loudly), and sometimes car companies patent things they never build just because they have a novel (read: unpatented by other manufacturers) idea.

I would be very interested in Ford's take on a rooftop battery when they already give us a fairly low stated roof weight capacity for Sasquatch packaged Broncos?

I would drive an EV Bronco. I said I never would drive an EV period. Until I drove a buddies Tesla the other day. Man I was blown away by it, I know an EV Bronco won't be the same but I am here for it.

I wonder how this is going to work-batteries are heavy! A older gen Escape battery weighs 160lbs alone.

gotta wonder if the wife and I can get that mounted on the roof by ourselves for those way out of town journeys. could be done if the individual cells are added after the basic structure is heaved up there.

Should I just patent an auxiliary gas tank on the roof with a hose dropping down to the gas cap? 2-Door mileage extender *TM

I hope this isn't another Mitchell Watts (T&C Ford) joke. I already got sucked in on Apr 1 for the EV Bronco with a 350+ mile range and Mach E Synch 4A screen.

We don't need batteries for the ICE cars to perform and have most features as EV's do.

All the cool gizmos in a tesla can work in a gas car too

Nothing like putting a ton of weight on the roof to improve those off camber situations & general handling :sneaky:

Oh I wasn't talking about the gizmos, I was talking about take off. Slam the peddle and it throws you in the seat and you are GONE!

I find that it is best to put batteries where they are most likely to be exposed to direct sunlight.
