The placement of the dial for headlight settings is a bad one. I desire to keep them in "automatic" mode at all times, but several times, I've hit the dial with my right knee (I guess?) when exiting and didn't even feel it. Then I realize my lights were on for a half hour because this judged it to "on."

I blame the placement of your knee.

Sounds like you need "Easy Entry" like available on many Fords.

Easy Entry = Moves the driver seat rearward up to 2 in (5 cm) and the steering column up when you switch the ignition off. The driver seat and steering column return to their previous positions when you switch the ignition on. Depending on your vehicle, the column may move up and in.

Disable the auto feature through FORSCAN, that should be a viable means of avoiding this situation in the future and get you back in control of the vehicle.

It's the same with the Ranger. Seems to be just at the right place to get bumped by the left knee. You'll get used to it, and won't hit it after a few times.

Sounds a little like operator error.

This explains why my fog lights are randomly off! My knee probably hits the center of the dial.

Just happened to me yesterday for the first time. Came out of grocery store and lights were on.

Add me to the list of light switch knee bumpers. Only happened a few times though.
