From the limited information, I'm betting Ford has done a good job with the new Bronco. Open air rugged 4x4, yah! For me it comes down to the amount of longer distance driving I'll be doing.

If not driving a lot, then "Plan B" is sticking with my current old 4x4s, which already provide top-down and off-road fun locally.

But if travelling longer distances are in the future, a new Bronco would be significantly better in terms of 4 adult passenger room (if getting 4 door version) and longer highway driving in route to various destinations and off-roading out west.

And considering the lockdown on travelling overseas and future hassles when that opens up, a new Bronco for adventures inside the USA is looking increasingly appealing.

i dont expect to not get the bronco but like you i have been looking at possibilities because of all the extra time on my hands. 4runner pro seems to be the logical choice. i agree about the archaic tech and underpowered but expect the new one that is coming to address these issues to maintain competitiveness. as i am waiting for the raptor version of the bronco i have time to wait and see. i currently have my 7th wrangler and want something different. have only had one ford product in my life and absolutely loved it
I believe an even new 4Runner is in the pipeline.

Every manufacturer of 4x4 trail rated suv will be pipe lining, waiting on the Bronco. If the bronco is everything we hope for, best believe it will be all hands on deck.

For all you looking at 4runners, go look at some used ones (just a couple years old) crawl around and get a close look. I live in hawaii where every other vehicle is a taco or 4runner. I see alot of em getting sold for very high prices for used ones. Great for resale value and all but there are alot of things wrong with em after just 3 to 5 years. Usually minorish things but they can get alot of broken plastic and rusty undercarriage. Those toyotas are pretty pricey for having alot of small issues after just a few years. A freind of mine had to trade a 2006 in because the body mounts were rusting through and it wasnt even a beach cruiser. If they are your plan b thing of em as a something to tide you over till the bronco is out with your ideal setup.

With the direction Toyota's styling has been going lately, I don't even want to think about how ugly the new 4Runner will be ?

If Toyota designed a new 4Runner based on the 1st gen with a removable top, manual transmission and a new more powerful turbo engine, I would certainly get one as would MANY Toyota fans.

That would be super cool, but that would have to be done by a different Toyota that the ones who made the FJ Cruiser.

I guess it depends if Toyota thinks Bronco sales are hurting 4Runner sales. If so they need to compete with the Bronco and I think the biggest difference that the current 4Runner cant overcome is the removable top/doors.

Agreed. The reputation for reliability leads to extreme price gouging.

Here is the new Toyota Hilux, a model not sold in the US but I wonder if the new 4Runner will borrow design cues from it.

That is a better looking toyota. Current one lights all stick out way past the body. I wouldnt offroad anywhere with bulbous expensive plastic exposed, which is probably why so many out here are always shiny.
