Here is a takeaway, applies to me and everyone: Rear locker thought to be on or not, the spotter could see you struggling and hanging up three different ways. He also seemed a little exasperated. When you as driver and owner of the vehicle said “winch”, that should have been it. No sense stressing everyone out plus the Bronco any further.(Side note I was at HF 2 weeks ago and twisted my rear lower shock bracket on a ledge like that, that little place has some challenges!)

At least a real “stop and assess” meeting when he walked around to your side. Get out and look. And also being assertive matters: if winching, switching drivers, or backing off is what’s called out - by the driver, owner, or whoever is timing out for the sake of safety, then speak up.

I think back to that that lengthy video by @popo_patty with a concise breakdown of his recovery event and lessons learned. It hits on all this.
Wheeling with large groups is a new thing for me, and I have noticed that it seems to make people take more chances than they might otherwise if alone. If you feel like you need a winch, throw the line! Our last trip out there was a guy on portals and 38’s trying to hit a line a conventional bronco with 37’s had successfully done. Just miss after miss after miss. A suggestion was made to hook up a winch as a safety line, but…he didn’t want the shame. That then turned into a roll. Oopsie.

16 psi. I don’t have beadlocks so didn’t want to chance knocking a tire off a bead. But after watching the video, I could probably lower them down to 12 and get away with it. I don’t know..
Maybe leave the front at 16 but drop the rear to 12.

When I started off roading back in the late 80s, in a 79 F-150 short bed with a 460 swap, I tried to go as far as I could in 2wd, then as far as I could after that in 4 hi, with 4 low as a last resort.
Now... I am quick to use 4 low and both lockers as needed.
We all learn in our own way. 😁

I used both front and rear lockers (mostly rear) extensively during the Bronco Off-Rodeo in Tennessee, and boy am I a fan now. Worked great, no issues.
Yes, especially helpful in the uphill to the rocks after a good rain.
Those rocks caused a number of people to back up and re try 3-4 times.
I was locked front and rear, and made it up in one shot.

Don’t be too hard on me. Hopefully someone can learn from my mistake.
Hey I seent that veehickle at HEB!!!
Years ago I paid a shop in ABQ to put a Detroit Locker in the rear Dana 60 and a front Spicer Track slop in my 85 F-250.
The shop owner told me when stuff starts bouncing, that's when you'll be back in here!!!
True Story!!!
Realistically, you probably could have walked up that obstockle in 2wd with the locker engaged, since you did it with the front diff mostly inop!!!

Yes, I have to say I’m not real happy with a turbo on trails because of the lag, it’s nothing and then everything. The bounce definitely killed it.

I was a knucklehead today and forgot to lock the rear diff. Got in a bind close to the edge and hammered it enough to knock teeth off the front ring and pinion (190 with no locker). When I figured my brain fart and locked the rear diff it walked right out of the bad spot I had gotten it into. Both embarrassing and expensive. Limped it to a buddies shop and we had the diff out and tore apart in about an hour to see the damage.

Don’t be too hard on me. Hopefully someone can learn from my mistake.

Videos are too painful to watch more than once. In my experience, Lockers should be used on any obstacle that severe. If you wait until you’re in trouble….well, you’re in trouble. 😉
GLad to hear you’re able to get it repaired without too much difficulty. Enjoy your vacation!

Years ago I was asked if I knew how to drive 4wd. I gave the interviewer my previous job experience. He asked if I learned anything. My reply, "Four wheel drive means you walk farther when you get stuck."

Yep. Now add Lockers in your walking even farther.

I always joke that my winchs got me into all the trouble that it they get me out of.

"I can go anywhere" until you roll it.
OK, now you are bringing back bad memories. Except mine was more due to a bad parking brake. The lockers and portals just allowed me to play with the big boys. That was a late night on the trail and a long next day recovering. And calling the wife to tell her I was going to be an extra day and that no, my 3 yr old wasn't in the truck when it rolled.
