I dropped my Bronco off for service this morning and among the request was a full synthetic. The Ford dealership service writer asked why I wanted that. I told him it has been what I have always put in the car and he said Ford recommends a synth-blend... news to me. I still went with the full synthetic.

And sure enough it is a synth-blend...

There’s Full synthetic and there’s synthetic blend (which is what Ford recommends like you mentioned)
No different than 87 vs 93 octane. Ford recommends 87, but that doesn’t mean 93 wouldn’t have additional benefits.

There is no “full synthetic blend”

Maybe I'm off base, but I'd venture that most all motor oils today are some form of synthetic blend, in that they all have additives that are chemically constructed vs. natural organisms. I run only full-synthetic in my Ford's (2 EcoBoost, 1 V10) mainly for the reserves the full-synthetic offers in case I go over my own 5-6k oil change interval. But I do my own oil changes and full-synthetic only adds $3-5 busks to the oil cost.

Additives - not sure that really qualifies as a blend - those aren't there for the lubrication, they are there as defoaming or ph control or other reasons.

Usually when you see Blend, it's because there are different types of lubricants at play - and more specifically a naturally derived one and a synthetic derived one.

I personally run full synthetic on my 2.7, but that's because I do my own oil changes and I don't really care about spending the extra $10 twice a year for the good stuff. That being said, I don't think there's really any negative consequences from using a synthetic blend in 2024.

My thoughts are whatever makes synthetic better is why they blend it. So why not use full synthetic. I think blend is a way to get some of the benefits at a lower price point for buyers at all levels. Manufacturers, service centers and end consumers.
Only makes sense if you keep cars for a long time. I usually do. And I never buy used.
