When I open my tailgate it goes about halfway and then slams back into me as I step up to get something from the back. Is this normal? I have to pull and then when it bounces back I have to pull a 2nd time to get it to open all the way.

The tailgate has detents that hold 3 positions, 45 ° , 90 ° and 120? ° . If you don't open it fully to one of those positions it tries to close to the the next lowest angle. Sounds like you're opening to 75 ° and it's slamming back to 45 ° .

Is your Wildtrak relatively new? My Sasquatch Badlands did this at first but has since worn in a bit. It no longer has the extreme force but it still tends to swing towards the closed position if it's not locked into one of the indents.

If you open it, it will assist back to approximately a 45 degree angle. Let the piston settle for about 1 second and then push it again and it will assist back to 90 degrees.

Very simple. I can't believe people have so much trouble with it.

Can you clarify "slams"?

It's got a hydraulic/pneumatic (not sure which, both? lol) piston that should prevent it from "slamming" either way (open or closed).

You cannot force the door. As described above, it has three detents that the gas piston will go through. Open it, allow it to settle, push from inside lightly and it will go to the second detent, and so on. If you hamfist it, it will push back with equal and opposite force.

Good to know.

If feel like it's not right based on answers here so far, might upload a video of it so folks can understand and provide feedback.

It may be right. I am used to pulling the gate all the way open without help from a hydraulic assist. Will test that and if it doesn't work upload a vid.

I just had to check mine after the different comments. Mine opens effortlessly to the 45 angle, stops, then easily opens the rest of the way with a gentle push.
Is that not how everyone else’s works?

Mine works this way as well after testing. I was used to pulling my Jeep and Defender all the way open without assist. No need to pull all the way on the Bronco.
