Central axle disconnect. Basically "breaks" one axleshaft so the entire front driveline doesn't turn with the wheels in 2wd. Historically a weak point in every 4wd system it graces.
Oddly, BBs and OBXs with the 4.27 axles don't have FAD (or CAD as you will.), I feel I lucked out there. All others with Part Time 4x4 have it. Also oddly, Raptors which do have 4A also have Individual Wheel Engagement (IWE). I'll never figure Ford out.

I always thought broncos don’t have any axle/hub lock/unlock system…only transfer case front output disconnect…pretty sure driveline turns all the time??…another reason for low mpg, but I’ll take the reliability…I may be old but nothing wrong with old time locking hubs…

I have the manual BD with 4.46 and 4A. 4A is nice to have. I guess if I lived in Canada with on road street driving I would want it. I will say NY state on Long Island gets so little snow this decade, I don't see the need. If I constantly had to deal with some snow and then no snow on roads, I would like it. No need with the mild winters these days.

Having lived in places like Colorado and Minnesota with 1st and 2nd Gen Bronco's and having to frequently shift in and out of 2 high to 4 high on icy , snow and wet pavement conditions all in a 5 minute span was just a way of life and never put much thought into it. Living here in Atlanta we typically don't get much snow but having the 4A feature that came on the Badlands trim prove to be quite useful and convenient since I've actually never really used it until yesterday. I am grateful it came with the trim because had it been an option I would not have added it.
2H and good tires will do you fine on absolutely any paved road during a snow storm. The biggest risk always comes with stopping rather than going...

I continues to amaze me that folks buy 4wd and don’t use it…and in fact discourage its use…
What I don't get is people wanting 4wd to drive in rain. What are they driving through Noah's flood?

Regardless people buy high clearance vehicles with skid plates, 4low and all manner of off-road functionality ... then never go off-road. It is what it is.

Right of course. I don't think I did a very good job of explaining what I meant when I started this thread. In 4H with the t- case locked with 50/50 torque applied to the front and rear axles on snow packed roads and ice 4H is fine . But those portions and parts of the road you come across dry pavement or wet pavement when you need to negotiate a turn you put stress on the drivetrain and unnecessary wear on your tires . And as I recall, I would always make a point if I could shift out of 4H into 2H on the EB which can be very stubborn and non compliant on those old Dana 20 t cases . With 4A I don't have to worry about that anymore. That's all this thread was about

10-4 on that. If you need 4wd in rain --you need better tires

Right. You paid for all that hardware might as well use it. I used to buy cars w/o AC, but I got it now and you bet I use it.
