The plan now is to purchase it, but not trade in a vehicle. Both are paid off and have plenty of life left. If after a few months we're using it as intended (which is the plan), I will trade in my car. If not, the bronco goes to someone that will let it loose.

Are you not purchasing a bronco?
It sounds like you have a good middle-ground plan in place. It would be much scarier if you were trading for the Bronco and the Bronco was becoming your only vehicle.

I initially was going to get a Bronco, yes, but I've since backed out. I'll probably face some criticism for still hanging around here, so be it.

I think it was my love/hate experience with the jeep that ultimately put me off on the Bronco. For me, I think I dove into the deep end of this "offroad lifestyle" vehicle stuff, and after four years of forums and spending money on ultimately useless mods, I kind of overdosed on it all and I started to sour on it pretty hard in the last few months. I kind of rebelled against it, to be honest lol

I would drive down the streets/local highways and just see this sea of jelly-bean colored jeeps and 4runners and now broncos, and I just kind of had this gut reaction of being done with it all.

I don't know. Reminds me of the opposite in the 90s: Everyone driving a beige or gray sedan and just wanting to break out of it. Cycles, man. Cycles lol

So, I'm most likely a fringe case, but if my situation feels kind of similar to anyone reading this, maybe it will help to give that person a bit more perspective.

True, but the act of spending money on something, doesn't make someone a participant.

In the context of this discussion, spending money buying a Bronco, at the very least makes him a participant. Now, I guess he could spend 50k on it and then let it sit in the driveway!🤔

My sister in-law and her husband dove in deep. Bought a Rubicon and tried (at least superficially) to get into off-roading. They soon found it wasn't for them and traded it in for something more refined. He was also worried about dings and scratches, which limited what he'd do in it. I can relate to that - taking a 50k vehicle and purposely putting it in harm's way seems counterintuitive.

At 60 this July with hopefully another good 20 left, I am leaning towards a quote from Samuel Johnson.

"It is better to live rich than to die rich."

With that said, spending 50k plus on my 2 door BadManSas is way more appealing than 50k plus sitting in an investment account for my heirs to split.

Speaking of heirs, they are already wrestling with each other for the Bronco when I can't enjoy it anymore....

If I only bought it as a daily commuter vehicle, I may not have gotten it (I actually take metro to work every day), but it’s what the vehicle allows you to do that is the greatest value in my opinion. Great experiences outdoors in the wild with family - for me that is part of the math, and is completely worth it. Not that I didn’t think about dollars - I did get the base sasquatch because it is such a good value for what you get and I absolutely love it. I will take it off road and make every penny worth it through the experiences and memories created.

Also, I just read an article about Type-2 Fun. I had never heard that term before, but I’m definitely someone that craves Type-2 Fun (even Type-3 sometimes). So, there’s that.

Someone mentioned they knew someone too worried about scratching their vehicle. I suppose the first one will be the most painful, but after that every one is easier, until you just don’t think about it anymore. Personally, I don’t have to have a pristine vehicle. I just loaded a queen bed into mine today and put the first scratch (actually, several) on the interior. Painful on the first one, but actually a relief, because now I won’t be so uptight about it.
