You can definitely switch between fuel grades.
If you enjoy spending money you can run premium - or if you really feel you need that extra power boost (which is usually negligible) then you can run premium

What is infinitely more important is what gas station you purchase from.

Quick example - BP gas stations are franchises... so anyone can own them. Many many many many many owners in the Metro Detroit area do not take care of their pumps or have them serviced/inspected. You'll find pumps cheating you on the actual quantity of gas as well as gas with impurities.

Try to always go to a corporate location, like a Kroger, Costco, Meijer....etc

When I was a kid there was a real interest in winning customer loyality to a brand of fuel.

I've been running 85 and haven't noticed much difference from when the dealership had put in 87 when I picked it up. The altitude makes 85 basically 87 which is fine.

Plan to use regular on hwy and on the flat roads of the ranch, premium when we go over the mountain passes in the Sierra and Tejons. I've used premium in my 5L Mustang all these years, probably unnecessary. Even tried a tank of racing fuel.

Yeah, and those were the days when we got drinking glasses and picnic plates with a fill up (after they checked your oil and cleaned your windows, too)

I got called back to this thread thru a Like, and now I have to post an update to the effect that I got seduced into using premium after our recent trip to the Mojave when we got 27 miles/gal in Normal mode.

I use 93...I have noticed a big difference using it, both performance and MPG. I ran a couple tanks of 87, 89 and 93 for comparison after the break in period and 93 is worth it in my opinion. I would assume 91 would be the same but I don't have it for reference.

I’m not sure using/mixing grades gives you the equivalent octane rating. You may end up getting the worst characteristic of the lower octane fuel.

When I buy 93 octane, I cringe at getting a hose and internal piping full of the lower grade which was probably pumped last. Remember when each grade had its own hose?

I worked at an ARCO refinery lab one summer, early 70’s. You absolutely, positively did not sample a premium grade gasoline tank (1,000,000 gallon tanks) with the low grade gasoline sampling equipment. I presume this was because of potential contamination.

Any organic chemists out there?

Paying 50 cents or a 1.00 more for Premium negates your better mileage. Pay less with 87 and call it even. It's a wash. FYI I get 20.5 MPG running 87 on my 2.3L MT.

Premium only for my 2.7 Ecoboost.

Might be an unpopular opinion here but “Top Tier” fuel is a scam. Octane > Additives

Jet fuel isn't an option?

What about running it off of "hopes and dreams"? You need to expand your poll options.

Well the station I use usually has a $.10 difference between 87 & 91. That's less than $2.00 more per fill up, so no reason for me not to use 91. YMMV
Yeah, if I’m at a pump where the price difference between grades is negligible I’ll go with a higher grade. If the difference is enough to cancel out any mpg increase I’ll stick with regular.

That tiny little bit of lower octane fuel would make absolutely no difference at all, unless you’re filling the tank less than 1 gallon at a time. The octane rating is typically slightly higher then advertised anyway.
