I guess I just don't see the huge inconvenience of pushing the button when I don't want ASS to kick in. I already have to double click my Raptor button (which actually does save ASS setting), press the OK button twice to clear the Offroad Use Only and Seatbelt warnings, and shift the vehicle into D every time I get in.

Would it be cool if I didn't have to do those things? Sure. Does it diminish my enjoyment of the truck literally at all? Nah, I have thicker skin than that. It also feels like a 'preflight check' sort of ritual.

I guess I must be a contrarian edgelord because I don't like the auto-start-stop LOL. If they would just make your last selection persistent (leave it on if you left it on, leave it off if you left it off, next time you start the car), we would all get along fine.
Exactly.

I don't care that ASS exists - for people who want to use it, great. But why doesn't it take into account ~my~ preference, for ~my~ vehicle?

(I did do something about it, I installed ProCal. Then they patched it out of ProCal after the fact...)

I love how people can say in one sentence "Accept me because of my hair color" but in the next breath condemn someone else because they don't want to push extra buttons...

Well I don't think it's a deal killer for any of us. I mean, we don't have the pitchforks and torches out over this. It would just be nice if we had the choice. I don't see what's so wrong with that.

I'll bite.

Accept me because I'm human. Not because of the color of my hair.
Also accept that even if the feature saves only 0.1 MPG - over 15 million cars sold driving ~14,000 miles annualy is 21,000,000,000 gallons of gasoline not consumed each year.

And yes, I'll condemn someone all day long if they don't think that is in some way significant.

If you are concerned with fuel use, why own a Bronco Raptor in the first place?

One could make the argument that the cost of the internal electric pump ($256.00) some other internals tubes and seals ($40.00ish), integrated on/off switch ($???), additional wiring and programming there is an additional parts cost built in. You aren't paying that full amount but there was a lot of $$ in design, manufacturing, programming that went into the development that may or may not have much real world fuel/emission savings over the course of normal ownership.

Ford was putting park assist on everything and found out through telematics less than 5% actually use it so they're removing it as standard equipment. They could do this with ASS by making it optional or standard if the vehicle is in an enhanced emission state. The other option is to just allow it to be disabled through the touch screen or cluster if people just don't want to be bothered with the feeling.

By this reasoning we should all be forced into driving Smart cars. Yeah its hyperbole but the fuel savings would indeed be "significant." BTW I don't care what color your hair is. I just wish I had hair!

BTW it occurs to me that I'm doing more to save the planet than you are, by driving my little 2.3L 4-banger instead of your big bad Bronco Raptor. Maybe in recognition of my sacrifice I could be afforded the grace of disabling it once without having to push a button every time, if it pleases the Crown? LOL

I can agree that it would be nice if we had the choice. And we do by spending $100 on a little harness.

This is purely conjecture, but if I had to guess, Ford understands their core demographics and/or has data that shows that if the car simply remembered the last setting for ASS, there would be a couple things that happen:
  • Average Driver accidentally presses the button on the dash one day and the feature never gets turned back on until they accidentally press it again 2 years later.
  • Average Driver accidentally presses the button on the dash one day and then takes their car in for service because the Auto Start Stop 'stopped working'

Sorry guys - I think my original comment may have been misconstrued and probably came off a little harsh.

I intended to say in a tongue in cheek way that based on my read-through of this thread and others like it, there seems to be a good number of people whose only problem with the feature is that 'The Nanny State is forcing me to do a thing I don't like for a reason I don't believe in.'

My bad - realize I'm in the minority here - and will jump back in my place.

I think more likely is that government regulations force this "feature". Either through specific order to make ASS the default, or by CAFE fleet MPG standards. I would be willing to bet money that this is NOT a feature the majority of Ford owners actually want.

I did see the news item about some bureaucrat in the Trump administration vowing to end whatever regulation is mandating this. I didn't actually read the article (see how much I actually care about this? :) ), just skimmed the headline. No, its not as important as world peace or inflation, but it's something. I'll take it.

The only enjoyment I get out of that A.S.S. feature is seeing the people that think I should just press the button get all hyperventilated over the fact that I don't want to .

No need to apologize, it's been an interesting discussion. I want us both to be happy. Just make the damned button do what each of us wants LOL.

Guarantee 100% those lovers of start/stop technology would come unglued at Ford if they defaulted the auto headlights to “off” every time you shut the truck off and they wouldn’t want to hear the tried and true “there’s a switch, too hard to use it?”

People get so butt hurt these days, nobody is being an overbearing warlord hating on those who love the tech and saving drops of gas.

It’s such a stupidly simple and harmless request.

Keep the ASS system, no problem, but make the damn button remember where we left it. Uhhh…like the seat heaters…how hard is that?

Part of EPA/CAFE is that your emissions are based on the default startup condition of the vehicle.

So... that's why we can't have things like ASS that remembers it's position, or GOAT mode that remembers you like Sport. If it's not the default startup condition of the vehicle, then you don't get credit for it for emission's sake.
