I’ve seen every episode of How It’s Made so obviously I’m an expert 😀, so what is the issue with Webasto exactly?

Best I can tell, the manufacturing process for a hard goes like so:

1. Press button to inject hot soft plastic into molder
2. Press button when hard top is formed-hard top ejects
3. Small crew removes flashing and blemishes from hard top
4. Small crew adds plumbing and electrical for window washer
5. Throw in windows. Done.

Why isn’t Webasto churning out like 1200 of these every day??

1. Workforce
2. That "plastic" you write about - requires a resin that comes from....you guessed it, oil.

I don't know their exact issue but do know there is a PVC shortage. At work, we have had suppliers of PVC fabricated material revise pricing of their products upwards of 20%. Also, labor is still is short supply.

Probably the same reason I'm waiting months for Webasto heater parts to come from the plant in Germany. But it's not just them, I'm having supplier issues with almost every vendor I have right now, many who never have issues.

I’m just frustrated like many others here. So much of the Bronco is made of one plastic or another, yet we don’t see the dash for example, as a constraint - that I’m aware of.

If it was labor or lack of raw materials Ford would have just said so. It would have been understandable and bought a little more goodwill.

The leaky design hypothesis is looking more and more credible.
I wonder about this as well.

So they are doing to just produce tops that leak until they finally get it fixed? That doesn't sound good, but maybe they figure they'll take care of them with warranty claims.

Take a breath...and realize Ford is totally over a barrel because their supply chain management elected to procure 100% of a necessary part from a supplier who didn't even have a plant, and based their price quote on underpaying labor by $10/hour.

Sure....this particular problem will eventually be resolved. But those planning for a 2022 or 2023 haven't even heard yet of the inevitable next blunder that's just around the corner. Just sayin'

Haven't read back thru this thread but YES, leaks has been my speculation too.

Will be lots of drive thru car washes during warranty period of my June 28 production bronco!

And don't Webasto make both the Modular and the Molded in Color tops? Not smart to put all your supplier eggs in one basket. I'd like to know that the "millions are being spent on the tops problem" really means in their Renege on Built Estimate email I just got.

Just ship it and I'll hit it with a little Flex-Seal. :)

What I have been seeing on this forum is that there is a problem with the tops passing QC and many are getting rejected. But I am just thinking it through. No actual inside info.
