And correct me if I’m wrong but your set up seems to work like this:

the light-sensing relay senses the dome light is on….and in turn…that turns on your after market LED’s?
Yes.

The LED motion sensing lights your pointed me to arrived yesterday

i just got the 7 inch man they are BRIGHT

I feel like just ONE in the back is gonna be plenty. Thanks for that rec

so this is prob a dumb question but in the OP’s set up…couldn’t you just run the LED’s straight into the engine bay and hook them into the fuse for the dome lights with one of those fuse circuit thingys? Would that work as well? (When domes come on so do the LEDs?)

No. You must of missed the 3 pages of discussion on why that won’t work.

yea they really are

have to wait until it’s dark to see how the motion sensitivity is gonna be and if I need to tape over part of the sensor like you did

Yeah, that's my only advice, so you know what to do. Keep us posted!

If you can point me to the dome light fuse, I'll send you a crisp $50 bill.

I spent 2 hours looking for it yesterday. 🤦🏻‍♂️ 🤣🤣🤣

As I was soldering my extensions I accidentally shorted to ground through the soldering iron. Lights went out with the spark, and no fuses were blown. Two resets and they came back on....

They are controlled by the BCM

Such a great and clever idea you guys have come up with here. I have the Ford Acc Bestop Canvas Bimini top on mine, installed on my soft top 4 door. I'll use the canvas top to mount and wire my lights with a bit of silicone to fill in the small holes I'll need to make to run the wiring. Thinking I'll mount the 6 lights with velcro on the underside of the top. I'll orientate the lights so they go from side to side rather than front to back with one over each seat and two on the roll bar shining into the cargo area. Really appreciate all the info shared above.

Getting there. Just the first one. Only kind of stuck on with double sided tape and I haven’t hid the wire yet.

the place I wanted to put them doesn’t work because the light is in the way of the lever for the hard top.

this spot is ok but on the pax side it covers up the little longitude latitude Easter egg.

Here's the schematic.

Jim...can you give a little more detail on exactly HOW you connected the relay into the dome? I'm not sure I understand what you had to solder and then glue (goop)together? When it is all closed up, where exactly is the relay/board located?

Sorry for the delayed reply, I didn't get this alert for some reason.

You tap into the Yellow +12v that feeds the dome light's push-button switch to power the relay. You can do this with Scotch taps, but I prefer to solder. Then you need to back-feed 12v to the relay switched side to power your lights. The accessory circuit only stays hot for <30 mins after the vehicle is dormant, so you have zero parasitic draw from the relay when the truck is parked.

You need a ground for your lights and for the control side of the relay - I just soldered into the harness ground since it's right there.

Wire the red 12v lead from your lights to the NO point on the relay switched side, and now you have a light sensing relay triggering your LEDs.

I drilled a hole in the side of the dome light housing (black plastic) to insert the light sensor into the light housing in the cavity next to the LED on the circuit board and the lens/reflector that holds that circuit board and the dome light switch in the housing when the clear lens is in place (stick a razor blade next to that lens and pry it out - there's 4 little tabs holding it all together). Glue the sensor in place with something, I used Goop, and reassemble.

I wrapped the relay in electric tape to make sure there were no shorts, and tie-wrapped it to the other wires going across the roll bar. There's plenty of space for it under that center cover.
