I do not recommend the use of teflon tape for this application. Teflon tape is designed to allow pipe thread, which is tapered, to tighten to a leak-proof joint. Regular bolt threads are not tapered and the tape will not “lock” the joint. Use blue lock-tite or a lock nut of some kind.
One other question: Is the lock nut a specific type of nut or is just any nut that fits over the thread of the "male" screw that twists into the accesssory mounting point?

Any nut will do. Run it all the way up the thread on your accessory mount -- mount the mount and get it turned where you want it, then back the jam nut back down and tighten it a bit against the dash. Not He-Man tight, but a 1/4 turn past hand tight or so would do.

If I recall, it's a 1/4"-20 mount. Very common nut

Yup that's what I wound up doing; they found one that fit the thread size and the diameter of the ball mount perfectly. It's been working like a charm.

Had the same problem until installing a small star lock washer. Hasn’t moved in 6 months.
