I find slippery is the mode to be. Normal 4A does not respond quick enough on icy bits, the rear wheels need to essentially spin right out before the 4A kicks in and engages the front tires. 4A slippery seems to do a decent job. But once it gets icy, even the 4A Slippery I find kind of sucks compared to my AWD Audi car, so then I stick it into 4H. Throw it back into 4A slippery once I get off the slick stuff and onto the pavement/snow patches.
