Uninformed opinion: I’d guess they don’t want to have a boatload of orders they can’t fulfill, making any customers.

Totally makes sense. Half the price, twice the mileage, more practical. If I had seen the Maverick first I would have ordered it but I’m too vested in the Bronco wait now to quit.

my dealer has 2 broncos as demos and 1 maverick. If 5 customers walk into the dealership 4 wants to test drive the Maverick and only 1 ask about the bronco.

Every automaker should follow this - Take orders for what you can build (plus or minus a few due to constraints, potential issues, etc.), then turn off the tap. Once you get caught up, open it up a bit more, etc.

First world problems for these guys though, I know.
