watched a video of possible failed E-locker which leaves the Bronco as a sitting brick. Is this true? Possible? If so I was thinking about a possible dummy load circuit which could be plugged in, representing itself as a functioning locker and load it presents to the computer. Any first hand experience on a failure?

Link to the video? If your locker doesn’t actuate your display icon will turn gray instead of orange, but I haven’t heard of it disabling your ability to move.

Hmm.
There is no actual feedback that the locker engaged. There are only two ways the computer would be able to infer it indirectly. (For the record I don’t know if it does this at all)

it could tell if a coil were opened or shorted (improper amps to the coil - just like it can tell if a tail lamp is out)

it could tell if the wheel speed sensors on the axle aren’t both at the same speed when locked

It does seem any time the AWD or ABS detects any fault it locks out all the goat modes and locks out 4Hi (although it seems 4Lo would still work, at least from what I’ve seen)

This is how I could tell my front locker was not engaging, even though the Hero button on top of dash was glowing yellow. It did not "brick" my Bronco, as I was able to continue my trail ride in 4Lo, just knew my locker wasn't going to be there.

Latest Matt’s Offroad. The video only planted this in my head. Nothing in the video backed up the possible failure.

Ah. Literally just watched it. This is why we wheel with a laptop as part of our recovery equipment. We actually reset his computer for him last year when he broke the other side. Losing your locker or axle shaft won’t disable the vehicle, but a difference between the front and rear in say, 4H or 4L, will. When he broke last year I was also underneath it pulling his driveshaft for him. We reset everything on his computer and he limped out in FWD. Everything was fine until his front tires slipped. Computer saw the rear tires weren’t moving, the fronts were, and it threw a “DANGER TO MANIFOLD” error or something that he couldn’t simply tell to shut up (joke) and kicked him out of everything.

There’s a reason I had I think nine different bronco profiles on Forscan before the last time I cleared it out. A laptop with Forscan can save you a lot of hassle.

Yes, only my Expert Driving Skills, Supernatural Reflexes and Superior Trail Acumen, allowed me to conquer the treacherous obstacles unscathed, while un-aided by any front locker, so I could continue on my epic journey back to civilization.

How do you reset the computer using Forscan? Is this more than just clearing codes? I have not had a need to do that yet. But can understand why carrying a laptop and dongle while wheeling is useful.

It’s resetting the codes, disconnecting the battery (both posts) and then touching the terminal connections together. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes then hook the battery up and reset codes again. This isn’t any kind of approved sequence created by Ford or anything, but it was the only consistent way to completely reset the codes and computers.

We have forscan lite on our phones but even using the same dongle it just doesn’t work compared to the laptop
