Steering catch

I have a 24 HLE with 8,000 miles. While driving at high speed it feels like it catches or has a delay when steering. It makes me catch my breath for a second as it feels like it's not going to turn. Has anyone had this issue? I called the service department at the local dealer and he told me he hasn't heard of this complaint before.

New one for me. Is it repeatable? If so, I'd just take it into dealer. If it's not - they probably won't be able to do much other than tell you they couldn't repeat and send you on your way...

Looking at the steering shaft in the engine compartment where it connects up to the steering rack would be a good start - make sure a stick or wire or something hasn't snagged up in one of the joints.

I have thought of the standard service department response, "Sorry we can't replicate the problem." So frustrating when that happens! I will have my husband take a look to see if there is anything obvious causing the issue. Otherwise, it's off to the service department I go!

This sounds like the feeling of the lane keep assist when triggered. Try turning it off.

Dumb question - is the lane keeping assist function on (assuming you have it)? I thought that's what mine did with it on and I believe I turned it off as I didn't like it...

Awe.... the lane keeping assist never crossed my mind!!! I will disable that function and see what happens! Thank you guys for bring that up, I hope it's that simple!

I recently felt something with the steering during a couple recent road trips. It didn't feel like binding, but it felt like the steering wheel was disconnected from the rack for the first couple degrees of steering input from strait, then the first couple degrees returning to center.

Conditions:
- '22 Badlands w/2.7
- Highway speed ~65mph
- steering didn't respond to input for the first 2-3 deg from center, then the first couple degrees back to center
- At low or city traffic speeds I cannot duplicate the steering "disconnected" feel
- All other times the steering feels normal and responsive
- The lane keep assist was off

I always have the "gauges" screen up and the battery voltage was always reading >15v when this would happen. As the steering is electronic vs hydraulic my thought was that there may be a relation to the battery voltage at speed and how the electronic steering works.

I don't do too many miles, so the Bronco and it sits for periods of time. So, I put it on a charger for a couple days. The owner's manual says that when charging the battery to leave the vehicle off & locked for a few hours so the battery monitoring system will update. On my last drive the battery gauge stayed steady ~14.3v. So, I'm wondering if a low battery can affect how the electronic steering works. I still need to get out and get on the highway to see if I can replicate the steering feel issue.
