For those purchasing a new winch, and I'm no expert, I found the attached video on how to stretch a winch rope before its first use interesting:

Yep, testing your rope for slack is an important first step when new, but also whenever you remove the rope to clean.

Synthetic rope doesn't like getting too muddy or dirty and should be cleaned. This can be a pain, but can save time and money down the road.

The only problem with this video is SLIGHTLY setting the emergency brake. The Bronco emergency brake is either on or off. Any ideas?

let a bunch of air out of the tires, or find a slight incline?

Yeah, I was also thinking the slight incline.
Had not thought about the air in the tires though.

Or someone inside to slightly press the brake pedal.
