I asked about this in the "bumper standing" thread yesterday, but it looks like that thread was deleted before I received the answer: all jokes aside, what is the actual, real purpose of the turret hole in the MOD top? I cannot even imagine what Ford's intended use might be. I'm sure it's not for a passenger to use a mounted SAW.

Serious question.

Assuming you are talking about the 2 door MOD top; the 4 door has the same panel configuration as the MIC. For the 2 door, it is another panel to remove for open air feeling for the rear passengers without removing the entire top.

https://www.bronco6g.com/forum/threads/“bronco-dealer-playbook”-describes-mic-and-mod-modular-top-differences-shows-larger-“gunner’s-hatch”-and-confirms-removable-rear-windows.12915/

BTW, for military vehicles they commonly refer to it as a commanders hatch and it is located above the front passenger. It is used for better vision when you stand up in the seat. Now some more modern ones do have an actual turret or gunners spot behind the front personnel. I guess they were originally fairly open but that kind of went away.

Obviously it isn't for someone to mount a SAW to... Why would one mount an unreliable 5.56 when you can have a 240 or Mark 19?

I was in the military and have never heard that term, ever.

I've only heard commander's hatch reference for tanks only and not always above the passenger.

Example:

Everything else has been along the lines of this and never called a commander's hatch.

Tanks only, from my time in the Army. Could it be used for other things? Maybe, but I never heard it that way.

It was created as an option solely to delay production of Broncos. It has performed better then expected.

This picture needs to show the sign on the front of the turret that says: "Stand still and wait for the flash!"
