Maybe it would get Fords attention????Tulsa World Headline: Bronco Owner freezes to death after Blown Engine
I have a 21228 with 8700 miles. So, clearly there were engines built in the 21228-21266 timeframe.Update - today two more engine build-dates in OP table & graphs -
line# 37) - 21224 - (12 Aug) . . . 4th engine on this date
line# 38) - 21214 - (02 Aug) . . . 2nd on this date
Now 30 total, and 28 are still within '2-month Containment' range.
As these blown engines accumulate, the two 'hot zones' become more pronounced. And same w the 'clear gap'
- 'hot zone 1' - ebd 159 thru 182 - 16 blown engines
- 'hot zone 2' - ebd 207 thru 224 - 12 blown engines
- 'clear gap' - still 24-days - 183 thru 206
Update #2 - When did Lima start using the new valves ?
- in Good Engines thread by @VictoryLights, you can see a strange thing
- in his table of engine build-dates, there's a gap of more than a month w no engines built between 21228 and 21266 - i.e. none between Aug 16 and Sept 23
? Why did Lima stop making Bronco V6's for more than a month ?
- I'd bet this is when they changed over to the new valves, approx 21266
- so @mountainbronco, getting back to your question last Thursday - yes, I believe your 21267 has the new valves
? Has anyone seen an engine build-date between 21228 and 21266 ?
- might narrow the timeframe when Lima changed over
Has it been confirmed that the -AB revision included updated heads that are not prone to valve failure ?
Appreciate your work here and wasn't doubting it. I just wasn't sure if I missed some type of announcement by Ford or if someone had done a deep dive and dismantled one to find any differences.Has it been confirmed that Jimmy Hoffa is dead ?
My dealer said they were going to pull an engine from the line for my Bronco that conked out on Feb 7............. did you like the line "my dealer said"??
NO ONE has claimed there is a "new head design". There was most definitely an issue with valves, from the supplier. Whether it was a materials issue, or manufacturing process issue is unclear at this point (the plant newsletter cites both). Clearly not an issue that any kind of visual inspection would uncover. Also unclear if this issue affected all valves received from the supplier during the affected time period, or just a random few. One thing that IS clear is that the supplier has made improvements, and so far, so good! So when we say "new head" in this context we are generally saying "head w/improved valves" I guess this the best possible explanation? As far as f-150 failures? We have documented one, and heard rumors of others...but clearly not anywhere near as prevalent as Bronco, and not likely to make any noise in the GIGANTIC fleet of f-150s that are out thereInteresting theory that the head design matters, if so why didnt they have problems with the same valves and heads on the F150?
while indeed they may have a new head design and more ”robust“ valves...the 2020 F150 valves didn’t have a problem, still probably just a bad batch of valves as seen by the gap in failures.
in addition, the assembly of the engine and use of the suspect valves really needs be pinpointed to when the actual heads were assembled, not necessarily the engine, depending on shift, and Other variables. Unlike let’s say a hand built GT 350 5.2 engine, that is basically constructed by a 2 man team, these 2.7’s are made on a line of 50 people. The heads were probably assembled on a different day than the engine was put together.
‘this has probably been discussed ...but way too long of a thread for me to filter out...so if it has ..oh well
That's not rattling, it's just a few loose screws that need a slight adjustment, this is fine.Definitely. It finally cranked over and just rattled incessantly.
Sure would help if @Ford Motor Company would address this? Cat got your Tongue Ford? Or was it a prancing horse that stole it?NO ONE has claimed there is a "new head design". It's either gonna blow or you're going to worry about it incessantly. Either way, yes you're screwed.Am I screwed…
