Neither of these engines had a catch can and they both went 500K miles before being taken apart. Save your money for something useful, like lights.

This was a test Valvoline did with two Ford Explorers, each with the 2.3L engine. They put each on a chassis dyno and ran them 500K miles. One with conventional oil, one with synthetic. They changed the oil every 10K miles.

It had 7ml in it after 5K miles, I'll be checking it again here in a couple thousand. Not sure if that makes it worth it or not......
I had roughly the same during my last oil change. Actually, that is a lot of oil that can bake on the back of your valves over a period of time especially since it is direct injection engine. I doubt that when the engine is cold, the port injection really does anything to clean the top of the valves..

I'm noticing a bit of an oily odor coming from my catch can. (I've got a nose like a bloodhound.) I have a concern that maybe the hose connections aren't as sealed as they should be. Anyone else have this issue?
I have not noticed any issues but to be honest I haven't gotten in there for a good sniff test.

Interesting video, clearly a big difference. I've never put more than 150K on anything so hopefully I'll be good!!

I would have liked to have seen some clear footage inside the intake ports of both engines. They showed basically everything but that. I don't know how fresh the fuel is, just whatever they got at the gas station.
The fuel probably wouldn't make any difference since no fuel is introduced into the intake ports. That's one disadvantage of direct injection. The intake ports and the back of the intake valves are washed by fresh fuel with carbureted engine and those with injectors in the intake manifold.
