No Off in your off road box? are you really from MI? :) I have bug spray in everything I own, including my golf bag! I also carry a 8K lb. hand winch, 120ft. of cable, recovery boards and a shovel- I bet I still would have needed another vehicle (or two) in your situation.
I usually keep a bottle of picardin in a backpack in my car. For some reason I decided to leave it at home when I went to the NH rodeo and quickly regretted it. I was in a softop and had it down for like 5 minutes before I got a couple of bites. Top up. Windows up, except when I had to listen to the instructor. 😂

It’s all about ground clearance. You bottomed out. Lesson learned.
In mud like that, the more clearance you have, the deeper the wheels go into the mud. Mud like that coats the tires and removes most of your ability to move forward, generally just digging the hole deeper.
The only solution there is a buddy and a winch or don't take that line.

Add momentum... hahaha! I too prefer to crawl through things, easier on equipment and easier to clean but sometimes that skinny pedal has to be mashed! Love the story and pics! We have all been there.

I hate the feeling when you know you're buried.

I missed some monster truck sized ruts in the weeds once while having a good time in my old P38 Range Rover. Both front and rear axles fell in and landed right on the frame, stuck bigger than shit. My buddy in his old Grand Cherokee couldnt get up enough momentum to tug me out so I broke down and called a local hillbilly in wrecker. That lightened my wallet....

While driving the kids on a dadventure, I happened to see a deer hanging around back in the woods and wanted to get a closer look.

We made our way back fairly deep into this section with no issues a little soft on the left side but nothing unmanageable. Once we got to a spot where we turned around however, the doors off - windows down idea became a welcome invitation to every mosquito in Southeastern Michigan to feast.

This in turn, allowed a hasty decision to take a new line through an extremely unforgiving obstacle.

Mistakes were made.

Probably best not to attempt with that kind of mud with those stock goodyear tires!

Glad you were able to get it out! The pride will heal and you will laugh about it one day. Well we followed the GPS in the UP and the wife drove the road turned into an two track then into a trail with water on both sides and no where to turn around. So we got some custom Michigan pin stripe today. WARNING GRAPHIC VIDEO OF ABUSE TO A TWO WEEK OLD BRONCO. 😳😳😢😢

But now the kids are not going to want to go on a "dadventure" again, after being fleeced by mosquitos and being stuck in the mud. Anyway, glad you are all okay.
Luckily, Dad's driving! Hold on kids!

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I’m newer to the off-road game. Would a winch have saved you in this situation? Looks like there are trees to anchor to. I’m trying to convince the wife a winch is a necessity and showing her your pic. Fingers crossed

Kudos for actually using your Bronco in a real world scenario and also validating the old adage that the only difference between 2WD and 4WD is that 4WD allows you to get further from the nearest road before getting stuck 🤣
