I want to see if I can find a stainless steel one.
Or just use that clip and stainless bolt with anti-seize. I think I’ll pull all my skid bolts and anti-seize them all.

Broken off weld-nuts is a thing across all manufacturers. They are usually spot welded in and not very well. Damaged or rusted bolts and the weld nuts are prone to break free causing all kinds of headaches, because they are used in hard to access locations.

U-Nuts are generally extruded meaning their tensile strength isn't great. I would definitely research the tensile strength. Instead of grinding the frame search for one with the proper throat depth. For the RivNut you would need to use a stainless RivNut at M10 thread size to exceed 35 ft/Lbs which I'm guessing is somewhere around the spec for that fastener.

Do you have a link to one that does?

@StinkBug With the SFR plates, is it possible in a 2dr to get to the nut with the plates on? If so, I'm golden. I don't think you could with the stock plates.

The nut that's welded inside the front skid plate mount has broken off and I need to repair it to mount my new (heavier) plates.

In lieu of taking it to a shop to get the mount removed and the bolt welded back on, I've been told I could replace it with a captive bolt or a clip.

Anybody know of what could work in this scenario?
I’ve had a few weld on nuts break loose and replaced them with riv nuts. So far they have held

Question: Are these the same bolts that are taken off every oil change? I have the factory skids that came with the mod bumper. Should I inspect mine before I leave the dealer every time after oil changes?

Funny, I've never looked in to it before and it seems yield information is hard to come by. I just know I have never seen them used in high vield situations. Usually body panels and cable retention. Low torque usage. You could always go to Pep boys some such and buy a 3 pack. Put it in a vice and see at what torque value it fails. If it fails higher than what you need you're good to go. U Nut with barrel is what you want. Same as what was posted earlier. I'm probably just being over cautious to be honest.

Over thinking it. Just don’t over tighten it.
