the bronco is definitely getting from some database instead of a camera.
the main drag going past my house lowered the speed limit from 45 to 35 mph over a five mile stretch w/ BIG signs alerting the change and a standard speed limit sign shortly after.

the bronco is still showing 45 as the limit as i drive by those signs.
It uses the front camera in the windshield (IMPA) for recognition. Sometimes it doesn’t recognize every sign.

Mid package (no front camera), using google maps via iPhone car play and never have any issues with it.
The front camera is standard on all Bronco models. You’re thinking of the parking aid camera. Speed sign recognition uses the windshield camera.

I'm not 100% certain, but based on my '16 F-150, my former '18 mustang and now my '22 Bronco I believe the speed limit data comes from the nav database or something similar. So, you'll only see it on roads that Ford (or whoever their nav vendor is) has speed limit data for. I live near Dulles Airport a ways out from DC and the coverage around here is pretty good, but gets less effective the further away from town you head.

I actually like it as it lets me know if a speed limit changes on a road I'm not familiar with when it does work. Like OP I also use Waze a lot and default to that indicator when it's on. So far Waze has worked great for me with CarPlay. I do wish Apple would let it do turn by turn in the gauge cluster like Apple Maps, but that's not a huge huge deal IMO.

Hello!

I have a 2dr WT w/Lux and I've noticed the little function that displays the speed limit near all of the other gauges works about 10% of the time. Anyone else experience the same?

TIA for letting me know that I'm a beta for caring about the speed limit. That kind of thing is what I come here for lol.
Unfortunately that’s normal. It won’t recognize every sign. It will display the last current one it was able to recognize

That's unfortunate, as my hit rate is probably 5-10%.

Known bug. Speed limit does not display if you have a route entered.

So the blue lights came on, and I pulled over. The cop came up, and I gave him my license and registration.
"Do you know how fast you were going, sir?" he asked.
"No, I don't," I replied. "Should I? I thought that was your job!"

Very interesting... my wife's Volvo uses the camera on the front to read the sign, I'm pretty sure. I assumed the Bronco did that, but it sounds like it's getting the info from data data, not camera data. I'll play around with it.. It could be because I use Waze 99% of the time.
The speed limit signs are read by your GPS tracking not by any camera other than the ones Google maps sends out on patrol.

You can prove it by removing one of the signs..........

Get yourself a Garmin Zumo 660 GPS. Mine is accurate about 90% of the time. It's especially intersting when the speed limit changes to watch how it can change within less than 100 feet of the sign.

I don't have to worry about that function on my Bronco, since I got the Base model with almost no options except Sasquatch. ;)

I drive white my steeling wheel all the way down, so I don’t even see it 90 % of the time. 🤷🏻‍♂️.

I use Waze, maps and escort live, in some combo, And none of them are always 100% correct on posted speeds and app posted speeds in my area

This is what I thought. There is no way my Bronco is reading speed limit signs with the camera or it would be much more accurate. Like my 2017 Mazda that cost half as much, and had a head's up display, would change the speed limit immediately when passing the sign.

Not according to the workshop manual:

“Speed Sign Recognition

The speed sign RTT indicates the speed limit recognized by the system as the current posted speed limit based on the last posted speed sign recognized. The IPC uses speed sign recognition data provided by the IPMA .”

Interesting, then this functionality really sucks and is inaccurate. Or it defaults to GPS unless it is 100% sure it read the sign. What's interesting though, is that I think sometimes it displays the speed limit as soon as I leave my house, and sometimes it doesn't until I pass a sign.

Oh well, the speed limit really doesn't matter when I can't see the road because my wipers don't work ;)

Just finished a quick drive, as soon as I left my house it said 25 mph, before I had even seen a speed limit sign. I then drove past eight 35 mph speed limit signs, with no change in the speed limit display. The drive home was exactly the same except with five 35mph signs. If it truly is the camera reading the sign, that is completely unacceptable.

Looking through the manual, I saw a note about the rain sensor for the wipers. I didn’t think the bronco had a rain sensor, so this makes me wonder if those of us with the wiper slow down issue have a bad camera, causing both issues? But then, the speed limit does seem to work well on main roads, which really makes me think it is not camera controlled even if the workshop manual says so. Having worked in the tech industry for 20 years, I can honestly say that just because the documentation says something does not make it so. ;)
