I was wondering what everyone is having for their transmission temps with normal driving i.e., highway speeds and around town driving. My 24" OB averages between 180, no load and up to 195-198 under load or around 70-75 mph. I have the 2.7.

Transmission Temperature? I don't believe I have such a gauge.

Once it's warmed up mine is almost always over 200. 220 is not rare if working it at all. My engine oil runs about 5 to 10 degrees cooler.

Same. On a 900 mile round trip to Florida, I was watching this slowly tick up to the 200’s and thought that was odd.

Finally topped out around 205ish and oil around 210. What threw me off was the guage. As it climbed, the needle would slide closer to the red. But after a while, it appeared the goal post moved and the gauge got “bigger” and the needle moved closer to the middle again until the temp rose more.

Thanks for the replies. I'm planning on taking a trip this summer and I'll be driving through the southwest and was concerned about the high trans temps. I would really hate to fry my transmission just by normal driving.

Drove 3 hours down to College Station yesterday and back today. Trans only got to 183. Oil got to 205. Seems to be pretty normal.

Thanks for confirming, @flip. I did see mine go as high as 203but thought that as long as the gauge didn’t touch the red, I should be fine.

May I know what the the “normal temp range” is?

Normal operating temperature is 206-215. Most of the time you won’t see it getting that high during normal driving though. 185-205 is probably typical.

If you’re wheeling it hard you may see into the 220’s, but I wouldn’t let it stay that hot for an extended amount of time.

Transmission coolers are usually built into the radiator, therefor trans temp would be close to engine coolant temp. HD vehicles often have an additional trans fluid cooler (cooled by air). I don't know exactly what the Bronco setup is...
A quick Google search says optimum temp is 175*-225*. At 240* the fluid begins to be adversely affected. Here's a chart from TCI Automotive:

Factory gauges are weight biased. Anyone that has run real gauges know the numbers float almost constantly. Particularly in stop and go traffic. Joe Schmoe car owner doesn't want to see that cause they would freak out and bring the car in because "something's wrong". So they weight the reading so a small fluctuation in real temp or pressure gets normalized at "good".
