what cars with dual clutch?

I guarantee you it was lack of maintenance. Yes, VW's 40K maintenance has a cost to it--but it's cheap compared to the alternative.

It was a VW, MkV GTI. Wasn't lack of maintenance, trouble started about 8k miles in, went through a few clutch packs, a valve body/mechantronics unit, another clutch pack, and then and entire transmission swap which did resolve it.

VW's DSG compared to their manual trans? It's no contest. Only the truest of fanbois who still use the "feel engaged" trope take the manual. It's bad.

pre 50 year old me always bought the manual when I could. 59 year old me likes the slush boxes. If I pick up a 5.0 it will probably be an auto unless a manual is sitting there discounted heavily because no one want or can drive a stick any longer.

I had a ranger before with the similar 10r80 an there were lots of reports of problems on the forums from those transmissions. Even in low mileage models. The main drum was redesigned in mid 2022 an they seem to be better. I'm not aware of 10r60 problems like I've heard of in the rangers.

Yeah luckily 10R60’s never had the CDF drum issue like the 10R80 and 10R140

That’s fair. I had an 07 Autobahn with DSG. Valve body / mechantronics were a know issue on that series, which I believe was the first DSG brought to market by VAG. When cold, they would slam hard into a couple of the gears. Had mine while in Chicago (09-11) and can certainly relate. I can see why a few clutch packs. That, and idiots abusing the launch control at every stop light. Moved to DC, smooth blacktop, revealed a wierd noise thought it needed a balance from the move, dealership called me up to ask if I had hit anything as all 4 rims were bent. I answered yes, I hit ChiTcago. Didn’t fix it, replaced with a MK6 off the showroom and never another issue with DSG. Actually replaced that one with a MK7 while having that DSG fluid changed at 38k miles.

I have a ‘23 Badsquatch 2.7L and have already had to replace the valve body due to hard down shifts into first gear, but so far it doesn’t seem to have fully corrected the problem. Suppose to give it “a few drive cycles” for a relearn procedure. We’ll see. There’s also now a noticeable delay shifting from third to fourth gear. And separately a friend of mine has a ‘23 Outer Banks with a chronic transmission leak. So not the best experience so far with this 10R60 tranny.

I know this is just anecdotal, but the only Ford transmission I ever had an issue with was a high mileage AOD with valvebody problems. I've had 4R's, 6R's, 10R's, C4/C6, TR6060, you name it. Beat the absolute snot out of some of them and never had an issue, including racing applications. The TR6060 may not even count as its Tremec, but it did have the sticky synchro annoyance but no functional issues.

With that said, I have spent a disturbing amount this year on repairs on our low-mileage F150 caused by poorly-engineered electronics (electronic steering, don't get me started on that topic), and unnecessary EPA-driven garbage failing (such as IMRCs, AGS, etc). Ford, for the most part, makes decent drivetrains but the peripherals are where the vast majority of repairs on my vehicles have been. Obvious exceptions include the valve issue on '22 V6 Broncos and things of that nature, but on the whole I truly believe Ford drivetrains are stout.

tl;dr: I really wouldn't worry about the transmission unless you are pushing the vehicle to its absolute max on a continual basis.

Agree. 200k+ on my 4R100 behind a V10 in a 4wd Excursion. Lots of towing including a 28 ft. Airstream. One fluid change at about 90k is all it's seen. A transmission guy told me the GM boxes are more refined, but the Ford transmission never fail and strand you like the THM's will. His words were, they'll clunk, grind and rattle for 200k but you won't need a tow. No problems with the 10-speed in my V6 Sasquatch Bronco in 2 years and 15k either.

I was wondering now that the oldest Broncos are 3 years old now, which trans is more reliable. The manual or the auto?

I'm looking into ordering a 2025 Badlands 2-Door which now has the choice of Auto or Manual. It seems the auto has the rough shifts and the manual the scraping noise. Not sure at this point if either has been corrected so it's a pick your poison thing.

I have heard that the Ford Performance Tune helps the auto with the rough shifts, could make the Auto better as the scraping noise for the manual is definitely a little concerning with long term reliability. It may not affect the reliability of the manual but does make you wonder if other issues will arise.
