My guess is, he is referring to the wear that occurs at start up due to zero oil pressure for the first few moments.

Seriously, not to be a wise-ass, is there info showing how they address the drop in oil pressure for all these start stops?

Is the info regarding the majority of engine wear occuring at start-up out dated?
Manufacturers have taken longevity into account using crankshaft position sensors to optimize starting and synthetic oils certainly help. Still the reality is that engine starting is where the greatest amount of wear takes place versus idling or driving.

https://www.bronco6g.com/forum/threads/why-do-we-hate-auto-start-stop-so-much.97405/

“A normal car without automatic stop-start can be expected to go through up to 50,000 stop-start events during its lifetime,” says Gerhard Arnold, who is responsible for bearing design at automotive component manufacturer Federal Mogul.

“But with automatic stop-start being activated every time the car comes to a standstill, the figure rises dramatically, perhaps to as many as 500,000 stop-start cycles over the engine’s life.”
Nobody can convince me that an engine that's had 500,000 stop-start cycles will have the same wear on it than one that's only had 50,000 cycles but it's hard to quantify if it's worth overly worrying about especially in an era where people seem to move to new vehicles every 3-5 years.

Personally I disable it on all my vehicles but that's more of a matter that I don't like that there can at times be delays when you need to make a left turn and in heavy traffic sometimes you have to cut it close to make a turn before the light turns red. Also I personally always want my engine on when I'm in traffic because I want 100% control all the time.

My problem with it, is that the strength of the heater or A/C is decreased during the "Stop" function. When it's -30C or +35C I want as much heat or cold as I can get.

I don't have an issue with it, I turn it off and it stays off period. I also have a manual.

For me it's pretty simple, I don't value it as a feature and without "unauthorized" circumvention, it's active at every startup. Simply make the on/off state fixed and I couldn't care less.

An example of when I don't like it when active is pulling into my garage, holding idle for a few moments, engine turns off just as I'm shifting to park when then starts the engine backup.

I'm not going to die on the hill of arguing it's catastrophic addition wear but to me these are unwanted and unnecessary start stop cycles.

When it's -30C or +35C, I want to be somewhere else beside my car, and preferably somewhere else beside wherever I am! That said, auto start-stop monitors cabin temperature and would be unlikely to engage at those temperatures. I have noticed when it is very hot, the engine will stay running to keep the cabin comfortable. Even when it is warm, the cabin temps don't rise that much before it restarts.

Of course, I also still get my oil changed every 3,000 like a good "Boomer"

LOL

Plus it's easier to tell the wife, "We change it on the 5's and zeros, let me know when it's getting close"!

It’s never bothered me, and I never really understood why it bothers people.

Studied electrical engineering in college, and someone in my degree program created start/stop eliminators as a side project (this is when ASS was first being introduced). He had given a few to his buddies and they seemed popular, so near the end of our sophomore year he declared he was going to start selling them to pay for college. Proceeded to spend all of his scholarship money on parts to make them, and asked if I want in on his scheme by contributing my own money/time.

I of course gave him a hard time and told him there was no way anyone would pay for those silly devices. He had a half million dollars in his bank account by the time we graduated. Wooops?

I hate it! With regards to any harmful effects on the engine, it’s highly unlikely. I did read where it can cause starters to wear out earlier than in cars without auto start/stop. That could be totally untrue too. I just hate it though. Is the theory that it saves fuel, thus less pollution, valid?????? Doubt it.

Not an issue. Don’t even notice it. You learn to drive with it.

I get 22-25mpg and the ASS saves fuel. I think it’s been on one of my rides for over a decade.

I have bigger issues with what Ford calls tech in our rides. The Sync will stop me from buying another Ford.

i was in a line of vehicles waiting to exit a parking deck and every time the line would inch forward my Bronco died. A fellow walking past ask if I was having engine trouble. It's a stupid feature with very little pros and just irritating.
