Many have experienced the charging system fault messages after fording through muddy water. It is a result of the excessive dirt/mud accumulating in the generator/alternator. Ford issued a TSB to address the issue.

Do you think this is a situation where they will install the shield preemptively or only after failure?

I would think a dealer could order the shield before a failure will occur. The TSB seems to indicate that the shield and generator will be replaced in the event of failure. I don't think there is any issue or redesign with the generator. @flip might be able to weigh in on the issue.

OMG I already bought a new alternator and replaced it myself thinking there was no way this would be a warranty or tsb!
Quite a few have had to pay for a new alternator. I presume the new shield will be constrained and on back-order as the current stock is quickly exhausted.

Only 21-22? Did they do something different on 23’s?
I presume so. They likely saw the improvement that could be made and MY'23 Broncos have the new shield.

EDIT: @Snowdogyyz The Ford tech that shared the photo of his computer screen indicated that he has an early MY'23 that has since failed so apparently the new shield hasn't been in place for all MY'23 Broncos.

More like crawl underneath? lol. Can you take a pic of yours, mine was replaced at the dealer already, kinda curious if there could happen to be a revised one on there already. Doubtful but crossing my fingers.

Hmm, I wonder if they have found the boot is trapping water and leading to corrosion?

It'll be interesting if we can see what they changed, maybe make some 3d parts ourselves and just do the work on our existing units.

Of course it had to be. These things were failing way too frequently to be ignored. Sucks it took them so long.
