Things my garage can't be without:

  • Proper tool box (larger than you think you need), even if you don't have a lot of tools, a 46" or 56" toolbox can be nice.
  • Timing light
  • under-hood lighting. A modern LED lightbar is very helpful (image below)
  • Float adjustment tools, cleaning pins/wire
  • gap measuring tool (I prefer the blade style)
  • Proper multimeter (Fluke 87-5 is a great place to start)
  • Variety of flavors of liquid gasket and thread lockers. Remember, cherry flavored requires a torch to remove the bolt!
  • 6-point sockets, short and tall, 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drive, always more sockets than you think you need!
  • One small set of high quality, accurately milled screwdrivers you don't beat on (I'm preferential to Nepros because wood handled screwdrivers are wonderful, but many people won't want JAS in their toolbox)

Are rolling garage creepers/dollys worth having? Also, I saw an ad for magnetic socket holder strips the other day - would they be handy? Also, any recommendations for impact drivers for tight spots? I think I’ve seen some that have like a 90degree bend at the head?
If you are going to wrench much, I love a good creeper, a pad for your head is mandatory. The floor is cold, and can be dirty or wet with coolant (yep had that happen).

I have the these magnetic holders in my box and love them. You can pull them out of the box and take them to the work site then put them back in the box. They stick to the box and keep it well organized too.

I highly recommend the MaxJax lift, its strong enough to pick up my F150 crew cab powerstroke but still portable and can be put against the wall when I don't need it. Now if I could just take delivery of my Bronco so I could lift it up.

My tools have scratches and dirt on them. But I actually use mine. ;)
I don't earn a living with them but they most definitely get used. They also get cleaned and wiped down after each use.

Not mentioned that I saw, but a few things specifically that have come in VERY handy when needed (other than stuff on the very comprehensive lists already mentioned):
-Deadblow hammer
-Steel 2-4lb mini sledge hammer
-Set of 12 point sockets (I have had to use them as stripped nut removers as well as lost Wheel lock key lock removers).
_good set of varied-sized channel lock pliers
-a few various sized pipe wrenches
-small butane torch
-Ratchet straps
-cable puller (come-a-long).
-Harbor Freight roll-around stool.
-Best creeper you can afford. I have cheap ones that suck, and a 20 year old Craftsman that still works just fine.

Bill, is your wife aware of that tool box? Do you have a wife anymore?
LMAO! She just bought one for herself for her crafting junk. Plus she knows that those tools also take care of her vehicles too. With the mods she wants for the Bronco (whenever it arrives) I made need to add to the collection.

Float adjustment tools, timing light (what about a dwell/tach?), and blade type gap tool, all replaced by an OBD II scan tool...

I know, I know...
So I looked and I looked.... but I can't find the OBDII port anywhere!

Any hints?
